Welcome back!
Part 33, Escape from the Tiki Statues
As Coral and Herb lay sleeping, the Tikii Statues grew
in numbers and gathered around them by the river bank.
The Tikii was once the god of a powerful ancient people
called the
Nucks.
The
Nucks were a blood thirsty and
evil people who willingly
followed an evil god. One who preferred its victims sleeping.
The Chanka people were a good and brave people. They had
grown weary from years and years of the Nucks raiding their
cities and villages, taking all the young women for sacrifices
to their hungry god.
The Chanka people banded together the night the king's daughter
had been captured and taken for sacrifice.
Legend has it, she is the only one to ever wake up from
the sleeping spell that the Nucks use on their victims of sacrifice.
The Chanka people were victorious in a huge, bloody, battle that
lasted for two months. The Chanka people killed all of the Nucks.
Yes, all of them. None were spared. No spoils of war were taken.
The cattle and livestock were killed and burned. The crops burned
and seeds destroyed. They burned all of the Nucks cities and villages
to the ground. All Tikii statues were burned to dust. The Chanka
people wanted to get rid of the Nucks and their god forever.
The brave Chanka people are now thought to be extinct. But some
say that the Chanka people turned into the wolves of the jungle.
They are also said to be shape shifters, speaking all the languages
of the jungle. It is well know; to see a Chanka means that you
have been protected in some way from evil.
One day an evil, jungle witch found some ancient scrolls hidden in
an old forgotten temple of the Nucks. The Chanka people had
worked hard to destroy everything of the Nucks, but this had
escaped. It told her how to revive the god. Who ever did so would
be rewarded as Divine Leader of the People. Having all power. That
is exactly what the hate filled witch wanted. Power and the power
to inflict pain on any one who crossed her.
She had already given over her soul, years ago
to the Dark One--so, she thought she
'might as well give it a shot.'
As Herb and Coral lay sleeping the Tikiis were gathering in even
greater numbers. Soon they would have enough power to
possess them and sacrifice them. Herb and Coral
had to wake
up soon but who would help them?
Coral tossed in her sleep as the young woman in her dream
kept telling her to wake up.
But then help arrived in a
unlikely way.

A River Dolphin swam up and nudged Coral's hand.
Coral felt the cold nudge of the dolphin's wet nose and started to rouse but not quick enough.
A cold splash of river water from the dolphin's tail woke her out of her nightmarish dream with a start.
"Wake up!" the dolphin shouted in a peculiar squeaky dolphin voice.
"It's about time you wake up!" The lead river dolphin
squeaked to her. "The Tikii Statues are about to get you!"
Thunder rumbled nearby and it began to rain a little. Lightning was starting to light
up the sky.
"I must still be dreaming that horrible dream." Coral
said out loud.
"No, you are not dreaming! But you are
about to be dreaming a horrible nightmare forever if
you and your husband do not get out of here. The Tikis
almost have you! Look over there." the dolphin told her.
A huge bolt of lightning lit up the night just as Coral looked in the direction of the river bank
"Good grief! Those horrible things are alive! I thought
I was just having a nightmare." said Coral with a lump
in her throat.
"Yes, they are real; you must wake your
husband; get your boat out of here; we are here to help
you. The wolf sent us to help you. Now get your man
awake before it is too late."
Then Coral heard the chanting that she had heard in her
dream," Tikiii, Tikiiiiiiiii, Tikiiiiiii it was coming
from the statues and they were starting to look very angry.

"Herb!" Coral tried to shout, but only a whisper came out.
Her voice had seized up with fear. "Herb, wake up!" her
intended roar came out again only as a whisper.
Coral moved forward to try and grab a hold of Herb
and wake him but her whole body started to cramp up
at the attempt.
"More Tikii magic," the dolphin squeaked.
"We will help you
wake the man."
A lovely female dolphin came up behind Herb and poked
him in the back of his head with her snout.
"Wake up old man! Do you want to dream a nightmare forever?
Wake up!"
"All right, all right," snarled Herb as he woke up.
"I only dosed off for a minute!" When he threatened
to fall back asleep he also received a large and well
aimed splash of cold river water from the dolphin's tail.
Herb shot up straight as a arrow at the shock of the cold water.
"Why did you splash me? I only dosed off for a minute! I am still on watch!"
Corals voice returned to her and she no longer suffered
the cramps in her arms and legs. Herb being awake broke
the power of the Tikii Statues. But they were still not
out of danger.
"I didn't splash you, the dolphin did. We have to get
out of here!
Look!" She pointed to the river bank.
!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
"What the?"
"Jumpen Jehosaphat! Lets go!"
"Told you this was a bad place to stay!" shouted Coral.
"Nag at me later woman!"
He grabbed the large sharp knife that Sheeta had given
him and cut the rope that tied them to the shore.
The river dolphins helped Coral and Herb back out to the
river, they paddled hard to make their get away from the
Tikii Statues. The Statues actually screamed in anger
when Coral and Herb made their get away with the help
of the river dolphins.
"Curses! Foiled Again!"
It was pitch
black outside when Coral and Herb escaped
from the Tikii statues. They were nearly blind in the night
and out on the dangerous river.
Fortunately for them they had the
very best guides
that the river had to offer. The river dolphins knew their
home well.
Once they got out onto the river, the dolphin that had
spoken to Coral earlier told her that she and Herb could
put away their oars. The dolphins would take the wooden
boat down the river the best and fastest ways possible.
Coral and Herb agreed and put away their oars.
"Where will you take us?" Coral asked in the dark.
"We will take you down the river until about noon
tomorrow to an island where you can be safe and rest.
No Tikis there. Pumas are the Guardians." the
dolphin said in his squeaky language. Before Coral
could ask further questions, the dolphin dove off
into the dark water.
Herb and Coral had no choice but to trust the dolphins
and they actually got a bit of rest in the dark of the night.
They could feel the boat moving swiftly and expertly
along the river. But once the sun started to come up and
Coral and Herb could get a good look at their brave dolphin
rescuers they could not take their eyes off of them.
Who could resist watching a river dolphin swimming like a
champion up the river? River rapids were but play to them.

And play these beautiful creatures did. Showing off for
Coral and Herb the whole way. They were dazzled and
amazed at all the array of brave and daring tricks these
dolphins would perform. They were all very beautiful and
in excellent health.
