Because of slumping sales in building materials, management at Sears,
Roebuck & Company decided to utilize their profitable catalogue and offer entire homes as kits. Between 1908 and 1940, you could open your Sears catalogue and choose a home. It would be sent to you as a kit via railway car and you could either build it yourself or hire a contractor to build it for you, depending on the building codes of the town where you lived. Everything you needed to build your home was included-right down to the nails and screws! Collectively, these buildings are known as "Craftsman Homes" (their tool line was named after them) and are highly prized for their solid workmanship. Many survive to this day. Because of the house's dimensions, I was not able to duplicate it exactly, but it's pretty darn close!
Enjoy this mansion from the 1918 Sears catalogue. It is partially furnished.
Points of interest include the sun room; sleeping porch on the 2nd floor attached to the master bedroom for those hot Summer nights...(remember...no air conditioning in 1918); the nook at the hearth for wintry nights; and seperate maid's quarters with a stairway leading directly to the kitchen. The Porte Corchere will keep the rain off your Model A Ford and there are large decks off the secondary bedrooms upstairs. Oh...and by the way....In 1918, this house would have cost you $5140.00
