The Castle was originally built in the mid-18th century by Jacob Craene as a hunting lodge. As this period saw the decline of the Castle as a fortification, the house has been designed entirely to function as a residence with elaborate architectural features and room for staff and horses. An extensive French garden was added so as to accomodate those ladies that did not enjoy to hunt. Although the Craene family preferred their main residence for family gatherings, the castle was almost continually occupied by young family members that tried to get away from their hectic political careers.
The Castle itself has three floors and a cellar. The cellar contains wines, beer, dried fruits and other cooking ingredients. On the bottom floor you may find the kitchen, the staff common room, a hallway and corridor and both the living and dining room. On the first floor there is another corridor, a guest room, a bathroom, the master bedroom and a smoking room. Finally, the attic serves as the bedroom for any staff that may be present. Stables may be found in the coach house. The castle has been designed to keep owners and staff separate, and as such the staff has personal stairs and corridors. The whole lot has been landscaped.
