1930 Sinclair Service Station

Greetings, Simmers!

One vanishing piece of Small Town and Highway Americana is the service station. When you drove up, someone in a uniform and cap would immediately come to your car, fill the tank... check the oil and other fluids, wash your windows, check your tire pressure, check the battery (all these were at NO ADDITIONAL charge!)... take your payment and bring your change. You never had to leave your car!

Or... if you chose... on a trip, Mom, Dad and the kids could empty out of car... make a visit to the rest room... get sodas and snacks... and stretch their legs before resuming their journey.

In small towns, the local service station, like the barber shop, was a gathering place for men to talk about town news.... the garage was a favorite spot for teenaged boys to learn from the master mechanic who was on duty....

These bits of American History began to vanish with the implementation of "self serve" pump. Soon, oil companies divested themselves of the responsibilities and the additional costs associated with the automotive garage in favor of the installation of the incredibly over-priced "convenience" stores....

Some even had apartments for the station manager on a second floor.... Some were open 24 hours a day.... but many were closed on Sundays....
