It's much, MUCH easier to control their content that way and, yes, makes pirating much more of a pain in the ass by comparison.
Which, IMO, is a far better way to discourage piracy than things like SecuROM, which tend to just make things more of a pain in the ass for people like me, who (fully) legitimately purchase the game.
