Monks take vows of chastity, renounced worldly goods and devoted themselves to prayer, religious studies and helping society's most needy. Many nuns produced religious literature and music as well as kept and created histographical records and are as much historians as male monks, scholars, etc. are. Many spend a lot of time reading, writing, and illustrating devotional books, prayer compendiums, and musical chants. They attend religious services throughout the day, including a midnight service called that could last until almost dawn. They also prayed for the souls of people who donated to the monastery. The monastic life is a respected profession and vocation; there is the chance of real power if one rises to the top.
The second or third sons of the aristocracy, who were not likely to inherit their father's lands, were often encouraged to join the church and one of the paths to a successful career was to join a monastery and receive an education there (learning reading, writing, arithmetic, and Latin). Most monks come from a well-off background; indeed, bringing a substantial donation on entry was expected. Recruits tend to be local but larger monasteries were able to attract people even from abroad. Consequently, there are never really any shortage of takers to join a monastery.
The number of monks was essentially limited to the monastery's income, which largely came from the land it owned (and which was given to it by patrons over the years). Monasteries included a good number of lay brothers in addition to the monks, and these were employed to do manual labor, such as agricultural work, cooking or laundry.
--------------------------------------------------------------------
Levels
- "Oblate": You are someone, perhaps a secondary son of aristocracy, who joined the order from the years as low as five. You do not really interact with most monks except the supervising monk(s) assigned to you. You are not permitted to be alone.
- “Novice”: You are someone who joined the order in your 15th year or older and like Oblates you also do not go alone most places with a supervising monk. It will take about a year more for you to be even eligible to become a "full" monk.
- "Monk": You have taken your vows and live your life as part of the larger monastery.
Branches
- "Traveler": Monks who are either by himself or part of a small group of traveling all over the realm and even beyond to spread the Word of their deity.
- “Monastery: Priory”: A very small or affected monastery run by a prior instead of an abbot. However, you're still under the jurisdiction of another monastery's abbot.
- “Monastery: Abbot”: A monastery run by an abbot.
