Revenge of the Mummy

Dear friends, lovers of all that is peculiar, I bring you a most exotic being, whose body and soul have travelled beyond the dunes of Egypt, to the underworld, and, unlike the multitudes that have followed the same path, has returned to the world of the living. I speak of that rare creature, the risen mummy.

Our mummy's name is Notsounkommun Mumbarash, a name that encapsulates his misery in a surprisingly Anglo-Ancient Egyptian way. You have only to pronounce it slowly to feel the source of his unending sorrow. The anguish that would one-day lead to Notsounkommun's untimely death, at the height of his physical prowess. But we go too quickly. It is an ancient tale, one that must be told with care, lest we anger the ancient one.

Life was not all suffering for our new friend. As a distant cousin of the famous boy king, Tutankhamun, Notsounkommun enjoyed a lavish lifestyle, almost as rich as that of his famous relation. From what we have been able to piece together from a crumbling papyrus scroll, he lived in a delightful villa. surrounded by a beautiful oasis where "dates grew plentiful", that stood just far enough form the Nile river to avoid the unsightly tracking of mud inside on forbiddingly expensive, polished stone floors. Notsounkommun's wealth was such that he possessed, "twice as many servants as could be counted on two hands" (Here we must assume ordinary, five fingered hands, as we have no evidence to the contrary.). As for his appearance, in his lifetime, it was equated to the elegant figures carved in Egyptian reliefs, broad shouldered, small waisted, lean and muscular.

Despite everything, Notsounkommun was not a happy man. Try as he might, he could not surpass his illustrious, distant cousin, for the Pharaohs are considered children of the Gods. Still, compete for the sake of glory he must, and compete he did, challenging himself continuously in whatever came to mind, from the perils of hippo riding, to crocodile jumping, to his own version of chariot racing, with him running along the side of a speeding chariot. It was as Notsounkommun was triumphantly returning from one of these events that he slipped and fell to his death. If you ask him about the accident, he will swear that it was all the real estate agent’s fault. The villa was not five hundred hands from the river as had been promised. If it had been, no one would have tracked slippery mud inside and he would not have fallen to his death.

As he drew his last breath, Notsounkommun swore we would avenge himself on the real estate agent that had sold him the villa. Thanks to having had a superb job of mummification done on him, to this day Notsounkommun has maintained that vow. That he continues to cling to revenge despite his rival having long since turned to dust might have something to do, not only his massive ego, but also the embalming process. You see, mummification requires the removal of the brain, and that has been known to cause problems.
