Dating back to the 1780's/1790's, the house was first built by Captain Theobold Washmere as a wedding present for his wife on her arrival to the new world from England. Mrs Washmere would often stare longingly out of an upstairs window to the horizon across the sea, waiting for her husband to return safely. And each time him and his crew would return; safe and sound, bringing with him his wife's true happiness; his smile. Folks would often say that there was something magical about them when they were together, and about the house too. But they could never quite put their finger on it. The home has stayed in the family for many generations and was subject to major alterations in the 1880's/1890's. The most significant being the addition of the tower and the new unpainted woodwork, both fashionable and also to serve a purpose, the woodwork breathed new life into the home and the tower offered a view of the sea and the horizon which was perfect for watching the family's ships arrive home safely.

Located in a small coastal town many miles southeast of Augusta, Maine, the house has enjoyed a relatively peaceful existence. Of course there have been many winter storms that have terrorized the town, but none ever caused even so much as missing shingle or broken shutter to the house. Even when times were tough, the facade would not crumble. The house has a bewitching presence on its street, that draws you up to its picket fence to admire its beauty. Any bad thoughts you had simply fell away in its presence and you were free to go on with your day, unable to remember what silly little thing it was that burdened you in the first place. But of course, happiness cannot last forever, and a grim future lays ahead.
