  • 2024-11-25: Per request of heathensimmer (and I'm sure all of you Traits players will appreciate it too!), the Traits version of this mod is now tunable! A few other changes are under the hood, too:
    (1) Special occurrences - computers breaking, and Sims checking e-mails - are now no longer guaranteed to happen unless you tune it that way! More details on the default odds and how to change them to your liking are found in the description below.
    (2) Childish Sims, if they do choose to turn the PC off, now have a small chance of breaking the PC (due to carelessness downloading funky toolbars, for example).
    (3) Unstable Sims, should they not choose to check e-mails, now have a small chance of breaking the PC (I can imagine this could happen if they freak out over a background app not closing properly).
    (4) Unlucky Sims now also have a chance of breaking the PC when trying to shut it down (they didn't previously, but look, they're just cursed, so it makes sense).


In my ongoing series of "Annoyances that grind my gears", today I will be tackling another issue that has been on my Simmer brain for a while.

Are you too fed up by the rows of computers just sitting there idly in the dorms and offices, just because Sims are too dumb to know where the "Shut down" button in simOS is located? Don't you think that's a huge waste of power?
Well, worry about your electricity bills no more! I have created a tiny mod that will tackle this behaviour.

All it does is force Sims to turn their computer off after they are finished using it.
This means that if you have multiple interactions stacked on the same computer, Sims will leave it on and move on to the next interaction immediately. After all, that's the only way it makes sense, right?

(Note: This mod DOES actually carry merit beyond this figurative speech if you also use mods to get bills for water and electricity consumption. A running computer does increase power usage every hour!)

Flavours
With the four flavours I am providing for my mod, you can choose to let some selected Sims off the hook... or not :P
  • LimeyYoshi_ShutItDown.package is the standard mod which makes no exceptions at all. Even your biggest slob, who burps and litters everywhere, will turn their PC off after they finish using it.
  • LimeyYoshi_ShutItDown-SloppyFreedom.package makes an exception for Sims with a Neatness score of less than 250 - that is Sims with two or less Neat points.
  • LimeyYoshi_ShutItDown-likeTV.package includes the SloppyFreedom flavour and adds a distinction for Sims that are in a bad mood (lower than 0), who will also choose to leave the computer on as they worry about other things more...
  • LimeyYoshi_ShutItDown-withTraits.package has all the features of likeTV and also adds several interesting features for all those using the 3t2 Traits Project. This version requires Easy Inventory Check!
    - Computer Whiz, Eco-Friendly, Frugal, Genius, Perfectionist and Proper Sims will always turn the PC off, even if they're sloppy or in a bad mood.
    - Childish, Inappropriate, Slob or Workaholic Sims will very often forget to turn the PC off, either because they just feel like it, or because they are so stressed they forget.
    - Childish, Clumsy, Insane, Technophobe, Unlucky and Unstable Sims may - accidentally or deliberately - break the PC when they try to turn it off. Oops!
    - Absent-Minded, Neurotic and Unstable Sims will turn the PC off, but then they may remember something they forgot and turn it on again, checking their e-mails quickly before they shut it off for good.

Tuning (Traits version only)
The Traits version can be tuned to your liking, using the included BCON resource 0x2045. Here are all the values and their defaults:

Compatibility
The mod works with vanilla computers as well as modded computers.
Surprisingly, the BHAV was never changed by Maxis, so you can use this mod with any game configuration. The base game is needed, obviously! :p

The Traits version requires Easy Inventory Check and Nightlife.

Conflicts
Anything that changes the above resource will also conflict with my mod.
  • simler90's Social Auto Mod does conflict, but I have uploaded compatible versions of this mod to make it work along with theirs. My mod must load last.
  • twojeffs' Autonomous Computer Fixes also conflicts. Because it does the same change to "Computer - Stop Using Computer" as Social Auto does, you can use the same patch for it.
  • Cyjon's No Auto Turn Off Computer can be used together with my mod as it only prevents Sims from running to a computer to turn it off in case it has been left on. It does not affect Sims turning a computer off after using it.
