Backround

Back in 1860, a chemist called Alfred Lebon mixtured with different blends of nitroglycerin (NG) in order to invent an explosive, later called dynamite, for the industry. Though successful, the NG proved to be highly unstable.
During some tests in his laboratorium, at the time located in Bridgeport, aproximently 3 kg´s of NG accidently blew up, killing three co-workers including his younger brother Emil.

After the accident in 1864, the city council banned Alfred from having a factory in the city, and allocated him to the other side of the Bridgeport river. Alfred set up a new factory right next to the river. At this time, the bridge didn´t exist which ment that all transport were made by boat.

During the rest of the 19th century, producing dynamite (nitroglycerin) were considered safe, with only two fatal accidents during that time.

After Alfreds death in 1896, local businessmen took over the factory, keeping faithful to producing high quality dynamite to the growing industry. This kept on all the way to 1950´s, before development of more modern explosives put the factory out of order...

These pictures are from the early 1950´s, just after the Bridgeport bridge was built. The factory closed later that year...

Even though nitroglycerin were highly flamable, the heat from the fireplaces was needed in order to keep the dynamite workable

Today

After nearly 60 years of being neglected, the old factory by the river was bought by Mr Simon Avalon. A massive renovation began ending up with the brickwall being rendered in white and the old corrugated metal roof was replaced with nice fresh tiles. The garden was mostly laid down with stone and a few tough plants since not much else would grow in the slightly poisoned ground.

The house is now up for sale with a partyarea and diningarea downstairs, library and gym/laundryroom on the second floor and 5 bedrooms up on third floor.

The only two things that remains from the old days is one of the factorys old deliverytrucks and a sign outside the entrance...

Do you dare to buy it?
