New career for adults and major: The Arcanum (Secret Society)
You will find two different versions here. The first is the one I use myself. It contains references to people and events from my own neighbourhood history. For number two, I have tried to generalise these references, i.e. the Arcanum does not control the fate of the Drake Islands, but of Sim City and the Houses don't have names but numbers (in Latin). Both versions have different GUIDs, so you can use both if you want. Version 2 is only available in English though, while version 1 is available in English and German.
All levels have chance cards. You can use the career without the major, in case you don't have university.
You need to download FrikaC's Majors Made Easier to use custom majors.

The icon is a combination of two in-game icons. The Buffy references belong to Joss Whedon, the Division comes from the new edition of Nikita, and a bit of Rivers of London has also slipped in, which of course belongs to Ben Aaronovitch.
I hope some of you enjoy it, even if I only wrote it for myself. If you run into any problems, please let me know. Of course you can also leave comments and feedback which isn't about problems.
Even if most of the inhabitants of the Drake Islands don't realise it, the fate of the small state is controlled by the Arcanum. Only if you succeed in untangling the threads will you be able to weave your own web.

1. Committee minutes clerk
Mon-Fri, 8am-5pm, €289
As far as the public is concerned, the Arkanum is just the management of Family Arkane Ltd, a holding group comprising various companies in the Drake Islands. You know, of course, that this is about more than just business interests. Various shareholders, one could also say family members, meet regularly in seven committees: Military/Secret Services, Business, Politics, Science, Supernatural, Family and Public Relations. Each committee in turn has a representative in the Arcanum. Nevertheless, it makes sense to have the whole thing in writing to avoid misunderstandings and that is your job. Don't get too carried away when the others are talking their heads off. It's not your job to judge what you've heard, just to write it down. Hopefully you learnt shorthand during your studies.
2. Errand boy of the Magus
3 mechanics, 2 logic, 2 creativity, 2 cooking, 1 friend
Tue-Sat, 3pm-10pm, €411
You've just avoided carpal tunnel syndrome and now have a new task. The Magus is the Arcanum's contact person to the Elisabetha Coven. Most of the time he's also its council leader. It's amazing what he can do with just a snap of his fingers, but sometimes he needs special items and books for his tricks. Your job is to get them. Let's see, steel blanks for forging wands are fine, but what is a Mary machine and where can you get crystallised moonbeams?
3. Secretary to the Cognitor
4 mechanics, 5 logic, 3 creativity, 1 friend
Mon-Fri, 8am-4pm, €523
The Cognitor is the last post created for the Arcanum and is held by the Chairman of the Committee, that would otherwise not be represented in the Arcanum. As vague as this definition and the associated area of responsibility are, the current Cognitor is primarily involved in public relations. Or in better terms, it is actually his job to ensure that the public knows nothing about the Arcanum. The Family Arkane Ltd is nothing more than a family business, remember? Your job is to scour the media for information that suggests otherwise. The Cognitor will then know what to do.
4. Assistant to the Procurator
4 mechanics, 6 logic, 4 creativity, 4 charisma, 1 friend
Mon-Fri, 8am-4pm, €587
The Procurator is entrusted with the administration of the Arcanum Council. Officially, of course, it is simply the headquarters of Family Arkane Ltd, but it is a little more than a simple office building. The Procurator has to harmonise the interests of the other Arcanum members and needs your support to do so. The only question now is what has the higher priority: a helipad for the Dux, the underground bunker for the Potens or getting the Magus to renew the magical protective barrier, which the Custos has now requested for the third time already?
5. Commissioner for diverse and diffuse matters
5 mechanics, 7 logic, 5 creativity, 6 charisma, 4 friends
Mon-Sat, 9am-6pm, €750
As assistant to the Procurator, you have done such a good job of mediating between the Big Three that you have now been entrusted with a new area of responsibility with a lot of autonomy. In addition to the Division, the Tribunal, the Watchers' Council and the Elisabetha Coven, which each have a permanent seat in the Arcanum with the Potens, the Dux, the Custos and the Magus, there are other "associated organisations", be it the Travelers, who seriously claim that they can travel through time, the wannabe Frankensteins from the Initiative or the Slayers, who are actually under the authority of the Watchers' Council, but then do what they want anyway. You are now the first point of contact for these groups and don't be surprised if the Chancellor of the Drake Islands gives you a call.
6. Library assistant
5 mechanics, 7 logic, 5 creativity, 2 friends
Mon-Fri, 8am-4pm, €700
House Elz is the youngest of the Four, even though its namesake, the noble House Elz, is the oldest and largest of the Five Houses of the Drake Islands. Its representative in the Arcanum, the Heres, has by far the fewest business shares, and yet it is he who usually negotiates a compromise when Dux, Potens and Custos cannot agree. House Elz has the most members and is the only one without its own secret organisation. The administration of the Arcanum Council is the responsibility of the Procurator and yet it is House Elz that manages the library, which is considered by many family members to be the heart of the Council and the Arcanum. Understanding these apparent contradictions has led you to accept the offer to work as an assistant at said library, although this may seem like a demotion compared to your previous role.
7. Librarian
6 mechanics, 8 logic, 6 creativity, 2 friends
Mon-Fri, 8am-4pm, €830
You've realised by now that all the threads come together in the library. No member of the Arcanum can do without the knowledge and information you gather here. As a fully-fledged librarian, you can now devote yourself entirely to this task. Collecting, categorising and cataloguing knowledge. And you can choose which research projects interest you the most. You can leave shelf maintenance and counter services to the library assistants.
8. Librarian liaison
6 Mechanics, 8 Logic, 7 Creativity, 7 Charisma, 4 Friends
Mon-Fri, 8am-4pm, €1040
The experience you have gained as a mediator between the various parties in the Arcanum is now paying off. For although the library is primarily administered by House Elz, it is accepted by all as a neutral institution within the structures of the Arcanum. If the Potens wants to expand the influence of the Arcanum through a secret service operation, the Dux is of the opinion that a company takeover would be the most expedient course of action and the Custos would rather wait for the next election, you know where you can find the missing pieces of the puzzle to find out what information the Arcanum is still missing. And the most important thing is that the Arcanum trusts you implicitly. Keep working on your logic skills. You don't want to lose that trust, do you?
9. Head Librarian
7 Mechanics, 10 Logic, 8 Creativity, 8 Charisma, 2 Friends
Mon-Fri, 8am-4pm, 1437€
As one of three senior librarians, you're in charge of a dozen librarians, lots of library assistants and of course countless books, printed or electronic, journals, ancient manuscripts and brand new publications. You are in constant contact with the Director of the University Library, you have your own people in the libraries of the Elisabetha Coven and the Watchers’ Council, and if you want to read something for pure pleasure, the head of the Elisabetha Public Library will deliver the latest best-sellers to you free of charge.
10. The Librarian
7 Mechanics, 10 Logic, 10 Creativity, 8 Charisma, 2 Friends
Mon-Fri, 8-16 hrs, 2200€
And you thought House Elz didn't have its own secret organisation. Let the Dux and the Potens play their games out there. The outside world doesn't matter as long as you control the library. Let the Custos despair over the Slayers' rebellion. You already know how it's going to end. And if the Procurator won't stop complaining that the Library is the most expensive part of the Arcanum Council, just replace him. You are now The Librarian, the longest serving and highest ranking of the senior librarians. You know everything, or at least you know where to find all the knowledge. And you decide who you make this knowledge accessible to. And if there's one thing you've learnt, it's that knowledge is power. And by the way, unlike the other leaders of secret societies, you have regular working hours.
1. Committee minutes clerk
Instead of taking minutes in one of the committees as usual, today you are allowed to attend a meeting of the Arcanum itself. You're so excited that you forget for a moment that you're supposed to take the minutes here too. You quickly pull out your pen and take notes, but you've forgotten who made the last suggestion. It was about selling off the Venezuelan oil shares and that sounds a lot like economics, the main field of activity of the Tribunal, whose chairman is the Dux. And yet you could swear it was the Custos. But what does the Watchers’ Council have to do with oil shares?
A Dux
Good: You note that the proposal was made by the Dux and breathe a sigh of relief when everyone approves the minutes after the meeting. You receive a logic point for your logical conclusion.
Bad: When the minutes are proofread, your mistake is noticed and a day's pay is deducted from your salary. In addition, it will probably be a while before you are trusted with the minutes at an Arcanum meeting again.
B Custos
Good: The Custos is more concerned with political affairs than economic ones, but if no-one here interfered in other people's areas of responsibility, there would be fewer conflicts ... and no need to take minutes. When the minutes are approved after the meeting, you receive a logic point.
Bad: When the minutes are proofread after the meeting, your mistake is noticed. The Custos is not at all happy that you put words in his mouth. You lose your daily wage and one Charisma point.
2. Errand boy of the magus
The Magus has instructed you to obtain a copy of Newton's second Principia for his lessons in the Coven. In the library catalogue you quickly find the Philiosophiae Naturalis Principia Mathematica, but nowhere is there any mention of a second Principia. Did the Magus perhaps simply mean the second edition? Sure, the work has nothing to do with magic, but surely the aspirants in the Elisabetha Coven also need to know the laws of nature. Do you borrow the book or do you ask a librarian for advice to be on the safe side?
A Borrow the book
Good: You take the book to the Magus and he laughingly informs you that Isaac Newton not only revolutionised the scientific method, but was also responsible for formalising the practical application of magic. Of course, this works are not listed in the publicly accessible catalogue. With the Magus' order, however, it is no problem to borrow the Philosophiae Naturalis Principia Artes Magicis from the library, even if you have to sign a waiver in case of hyperthaumaturgical decomposition. You prefer not to ask any further. The new knowledge you have gained earns you a creativity point anyway.
Bad: You bring the book to the Magus and he just shakes his head in annoyance. "If I say I want the Second Principia, then I want the Second Principia," he says and stomps off in the direction of the library himself. You are never told what the Second Principia actually is and lose a logic point.
B Ask a librarian
Good: You ask a librarian for the second Principia and he replies with a slight smile that he'll be right back. A few moments later he returns and hands you a handy paperback copy of the Philosophiae Naturalis Principia Artes Magicis. Apparently, good Isaac has been exploring more fields than you realised. You get one Charisma point for not hesitating to ask when you didn't know something.
Bad: You ask a librarian for the second Principia and he replies with a slight smile that he'll be right back. A few moments later, he returns with a handy paperback copy of the Philosophiae Naturalis Principia Artes Magicis. Before he hands it to you, however, he wants to see certified proof that you are a "practitioner", including safety training on the subject of "hyperthaumaturgical decomposition". Of course, you can't produce any of these documents and have to leave without having achieved anything. The Magus really could have thought of that. In any case, you lose a logic point for not having thought of it yourself.
3. Secretary to the Cognitor
In your daily perusal of the traditional media, nothing worrying has emerged, at least not with regard to the Arcanum. But then you stumble across a wild theory on an internet forum that the published documents that led to the resignation of the corrupt defence minister were all forged and that the minister was only removed because she had become dangerous to a secret power elite. You happen to know that the minister was indeed corrupt, but you also know that the Arcanum arranged for the documents to be published because the minister, in addition to the Arcanum, also allowed herself to be bought by SWR. Is the amount of truth revealed here based on factual findings or did just one of these conspiracy nuts get lucky?
A let the Cognitor know
Good: The matter seems too sensitive for you to keep it from the Cognitor. The Cognitor is still undecided, but wants to take a closer look. He congratulates you on your thoroughness and you receive a mechanic point.
Bad: The matter seems too delicate for you to keep it from the Cognitor. However, the Cognitor disagrees and emphasises that he doesn't have the time to deal with every tinfoil hat. After all, he has a secretary for that, doesn't he? You lose a Charisma point.
B do some more research yourself
Good: You look at the poster's older posts and realise that he "discovers" a new conspiracy every week and is no longer taken seriously even by the conspiracy theorists in this forum. You also decide not to waste any more time with him, surf for some interesting recipes instead and get a cooking point.
Bad: You delve into the posts in this forum of conspiracy theorists and realise that pretty much everything they say is pure nonsense and has nothing to do with real conspiracies. Nevertheless, after reviewing so many confused and contradictory theories, you somehow find it difficult to think straight again and lose a logic point.
4. Assistant to the Procurator
The Procurator has given you the task of taking care of the construction work for the Dux's new helipad, but you quickly realise that the budget available to you will definitely not be enough. Do you want to apply to the Procurator for more funds or would you rather find a way to reduce the costs?
A you need more money
Good: You turn to the procurator and can explain to him exactly why you need more money. "If we don't reinforce the ceiling here, the helicopter won't land on the roof, but on your desk," you say. Your boss realises and you get a bigger budget and a mechanics point for your well thought-out description of the building's statics.
Bad: The construction work is about two thirds complete when your budget is used up and you ask the procurator for more money. However, he just shrugs his shoulders. "You really should have checked that beforehand," he says, leaving you with the additional costs of $15,000.
B You can reduce the costs
Good: You juggle the figures a little, have the Arcanum canteen cater for the construction workers, print out the non-disclosure agreements on recycled paper, make sure that you always get the pen back after signing and can actually save enough money to be able to pay yourself a bonus of $1000.
Bad: You think about how you can reduce the costs and actually have an idea: the bunker of the Potens. There's construction work going on here anyway and when they put the lid on top, the landing pad can just go there, right? At first, everything looks very good, but when the helicopter lands for the first time, it unfortunately doesn't stop at ground level, but crashes through the ceiling all the way down to the bottom of the bunker. Miraculously, nobody is injured, although the pilot gets a good scare. You really don't know why the whole thing is your fault, after all, the bunker was designed to withstand a nuclear attack and is already collapsing when a helicopter hits it, but you still have to pay the repair costs of $20,000.
5. Commissioner for diverse and diffuse matters
The last Magister died decades ago and yet this agitated junior slayer is trying to convince you that the renegade House Torvin is preparing an attack on the Arcanum. Do you want to get to the bottom of it or alert the Procurator, as is the protocol for extraordinary emergencies?
A Investigate yourself
Good: You search the Arcanum library for information about House Torvin and find out that the last Magister had a fiancée. However, she and his mother are not descendants of Mysticia Arkane, which is why they are not entitled to inherit according to the statutes, the Magister's shares in the business have gone to his cousins and the two women have sworn revenge on the Arcanum. You wonder how they are still able to do this now, decades later, but then you remember who warned you: a slayer. Of course, the last members of House Torvin are vampires! You quickly call in a few experts from the Watchers' Council and together you can thwart the Torvin attack. Your research also earns you a logic point.
Bad: You search the Arcanum library for information about House Torvin and find out that the last Magister had a fiancée. However, she and his mother are not descendants of Mysticia Arkane, which is why they are not entitled to inherit according to the statutes, the Magister's shares in the business have gone to his cousins and the two women have sworn revenge on the Arcanum. However, the whole thing happened decades ago, the mother must be long dead and the fiancée ancient. You dismiss the matter as the product of a beginner's overactive imagination and return to other tasks. That very night, the Arcanum Council is attacked and the vampire attack can only be repelled with heavy losses. Of course, vampires! The last members of House Torvin are vampires. Because you overlooked this simple fact, you lose a logic point. You also have to pay $8000 to cover the hospital bills of the injured night guards.
B Alert Procurator
Good: House Torvin is effectively extinct, but you remember that the last Magister's mother and fiancée are still alive, well, if alive is the right word, because they're both vampires. So it's fitting that a slayer informs you. You quickly alert the Procurator and he calls an emergency meeting of the Arcanum. The combined forces of the various members of the Arcanum are able to react in time to prevent major damage and the Torvin vampires only just manage to escape. You receive a generous bonus of $5000 for your role in the affair.
Bad: You alert the Procurator, but he is not at all happy that you are unable to complete the task entrusted to you alone. It also doesn't help that the announced attack never takes place. The Arcanum comes to the conclusion that you need the supervision of a superior for a while longer. You become assistant to the Procurator again.
6. Library assistant
You're on late shift at the circulation desk today and are preparing for a quiet evening when a hooded figure enters the library, holds a library card in front of you and mumbles that he wants to pick up an interlibrary loan. The library card states that the user is the Custos, and the book he wants to pick up matches this: the Pergamum Codex, a collection of prophecies about vampires and slayers. Still, the whole thing seems a bit strange.
A hand over the book
Good: You're not interested in his strange taste in fashion. The man has a library card with him and knows exactly what he wants, so you hand him the book and get him to sign the interlibrary loan slip. He leaves and you immerse yourself in your own reading again, a great fantasy novel. The fact that you use the boring late shift to conjure up fantastic worlds in your mind earns you a creativity point.
Bad: You're not interested in his strange taste in fashion. The man has a library card with him and knows exactly what he wants, so you hand him the book and get him to sign the interlibrary loan slip. He leaves and you immerse yourself in your own reading again. Half an hour later, a whole troop of demon hunters from the Watchers' Council suddenly burst into the library. It seems that a vampire has managed to steal the Custos' library card and now also the Pergamum Codex. Only now do you realise what was bothering you earlier. The current Custos is a woman! You lose one Logic and one Charisma point for your decidedly inglorious role in this episode.
B withhold the book
Good: You tell the user that the book he ordered hasn't arrived yet and then ask him to leave because the library is closing anyway. The user is so perplexed that he simply lets you shoo him out and you close the glass door behind him. He stares at you for a moment and then disappears into the night. You don't know what exactly has just happened, but you have the distinct feeling that you've only narrowly escaped catastrophe. You score a Charisma point for your decisive action.
Bad: You tell the user that the book he ordered has unfortunately not yet arrived, but he insists that he has received a corresponding notification. He also complains about your refusal to co-operate. When he raises his voice, you realise that it is actually the Custos. He has only wrapped himself in a scarf and is speaking in a hoarse voice because he has a bad cold. While the Custos continues to fuss and has a coughing fit, you lose a Charisma point.
7. Librarian
While tidying up the vault stacks, you happen to come across the original articles of association of Family Arkane Ltd. and learn that originally all shareholders had to be involved in all major decisions and not just the select committee of seven Arcanum members that now makes all decisions. How will you deal with this discovery?
A Make it public
Good: You believe that the other shareholders should know what the company founder was thinking, publish your discovery in the news section of the intranet and receive a mechanic point for providing historical context.
Bad: You believe that the other shareholders should know what the company founder was thinking and publish your discovery. However, nothing changes because the members of the Arcanum together hold significantly more than just the absolute majority of the shares. Anyone who reads your article will be in a bad mood, but that's all. You lose a Charisma point.
B Conceal it
Good: You work for a library, so your job is to impart knowledge. But on the other hand, it is the library of a conglomerate of different secret societies. Too much public knowledge is rather counterproductive. Apart from that, it wouldn't change anything, because the Arcanum members together hold much more than just the absolute majority of the shares. You receive a logic point for these insights.
Bad: You work for a library, so it's your job to impart knowledge. But on the other hand, it's the library of a conglomerate of different secret societies. Too much public knowledge is rather counterproductive. Still, you'll need quite a while to clear your conscience, not to mention many cups of hot chocolate, which will cost you a body point.
8. Librarian liaison
The Potens has just had an attack carried out on the CEO of a rival company, without realising that he was a puppet that the Dux had just installed. Or did he know? In any case, the waves are running high and the Arcanum could even fall apart. As a representative of the Library and a mediator valued by all members of the Arcanum, you have been called upon to find a solution.
A find a compromise
Good: After listening to all parties involved, examining all the evidence, considering all eventualities, you come to the conclusion that the Potens may have acted negligently but not with malicious intent. You suggest that in future, decisions of this magnitude should be discussed in the Arcanum, regardless of who is ultimately responsible. The other Arcanum members agree, Dux and Potens comply, and you receive a Charisma point.
Bad: After listening to all the parties involved, examining all the evidence, considering all eventualities, you still have no good idea how the conflict can be resolved. You spend hours and days in the library stacks studying literature on the history of all the houses and guides to mediation techniques and when you emerge, tired and covered in book dust, you realise that the Heres has already brokered a compromise. That's good news in itself, but then why did they ask you for help? You lose a cleaning point because you need a shower after looking through so many dusty books and a charisma point because you are offended.
B the Potens must make amends
Good: After listening to all the parties involved, examining all the evidence, considering all eventualities, you come to the conclusion that the Potens, whether intentionally or not, has seriously disrupted the Dux's operations and has also exceeded his own competences. To make amends, he must make the Division's resources available to the Dux for a month. The Dux is satisfied, the Potens grudgingly agrees and you receive one Logic and one Charisma point.
Bad: After listening to all the parties involved, examining all the evidence and considering all eventualities, you come to the conclusion that the Potens, whether intentionally or not, has seriously disrupted the Dux's operations and has also exceeded his own competences. To make amends, he must make the Division's resources available to the Dux for a month. The trouble is that the Potens simply refuses and you have no leverage to enforce your decision. In the end, it is the Heres' mediation that brings about a solution and prevents the Arcanum from breaking apart, but your reputation has suffered quite a bit. You lose two Charisma points.
9. Head Librarian
There is simply no more space in the library's stacks and you are expecting another five shelf kilometres of new books to be added this year alone. But the procurator simply refuses to provide the funds needed to build new stacks. Do you want to replace the stubborn donkey or are you looking for a more creative approach?
A a new Procurator is needed
Good: You apply directly to the Arcanum for the money to build new stacks and bypass the procurator. The Arcanum demands an explanation and in an impassioned speech you justify your actions and the necessity of the library as a store of knowledge and information. Finally, the Procurator is replaced and you get your evasive stacks, as well as two Charisma points.
Bad: You apply to the Arcanum to replace the Procurator. The Arcanum members scowl and remind you that the Library must remain neutral and stay out of the Council's politics. Frustrated, you decide to pay for the construction of a stack out of your own pocket, which will cost you €15,000 to start with, not to mention your pride and one Charisma point.
B new stacks are needed
Good: You have a brilliant idea. The bunker the Potens had built is empty most of the time. And even when it is in use, will the books really get in the way? The Potens agrees to let you use his bunker as a backup stack - after all, it can't hurt to be in the library's good books- and you receive two creativity points.
Bad: You have a brilliant idea. The bunker the Potens had built is empty most of the time. And even when it is in use, will the books really get in the way? The Potens agrees to let you use his bunker as a backup stack, but shortly afterwards the Dux and the Custos lodge an official complaint in the Arcanum because you are giving the Potens privileged access to your literature. You didn't expect so much stupidity and jealousy and lose a logic point.
10. The Librarian
Family Arkane Ltd. needs a new managing director. That's all the public knows. Of course, this actually means that the Arkanum is getting a new chairman. As usual, it seems to boil down to a power struggle between Dux and Potens. But you could also try a new approach.
A vote for one of the two
Good: The new Dux is convinced that he deserves the post because his father held it before him, but the Arcanum is not a hereditary monarchy and the Potens has much more experience. You are convinced that she is better suited to the position, give her your vote and also convince other associates of your opinion, which earns you two Charisma points.
Bad: Like his father before him, the new Dux becomes managing director and chairman of the Arcanum. He will fulfil his duties alright and the Potens will just have to come to terms with her renewed defeat. Nevertheless, you can't shake off the feeling that you've wasted an opportunity here and lose a creativity point.
B run for office yourself
Good: Dux and Potens together hold almost fifty per cent of the shares, but only almost. You manage to rally all the other shareholders behind you and get yourself elected as the new managing director and chairman of the Arcanum. As a result, you prove that you know your trade beyond the library and the Arcanum, the company makes unimagined profits and the power of the Arcanum grows. Not that anyone outside the Council will ever find out about the latter. In any case, nobody raises any objections when you treat yourself to a nice bonus of $30,000.
Bad: Unfortunately, you hold by far the fewest shares among the members of the Arcanum. Your candidature fails miserably and you lose three Charisma points.
