New Career for Adults: Buffyverse Antihero
I also changed the title because I was asked if there was a connection to the Twilight book/film series. I really wasn't thinking about that at all.
Hello again, everyone. I vaguely remember that there was a character named Twilight in the comics. This has nothing to do with that, so please excuse me if that's why you're here, but the word seemed like the most fitting title for this career. Ages ago, I was asked to write a career for characters who tend to operate in grey areas, and inspiration has finally struck. So here you have a career for the whedonesque antihero, with a little bit of Clem, a little bit of Willy, and a whole lot of Spike. (No Angel! Spare me with Angel!) I hope you enjoy it.
The career is available in German and English. All levels have chance cards. The career has its own GUID and should not overwrite anything. I took the icon from my first draft of the Slayer career. I honestly can't remember where I got it from back then. It's quite possible that I designed it myself. Everything else, i.e. Buffy and everything associated with it, still belongs to Joss Whedon, as far as I know.
1. Chicken, Mon-Sun, 7pm-9pm, £0
You've always believed that it's better to be a coward for a second than dead for a lifetime. That's why you prefer to make yourself scarce when the going gets tough. Of course, this isn't particularly glorious, but in your opinion, glorious deeds all too often lead to a glorious downfall anyway. Be sure to go for a run every evening so you can get away quickly in an emergency.
2. Cat Poker Player, Thu-Sat, 7pm-11pm, £300, Requirements: 2 Logic, 2 Charisma, 1 Body
Staying alive is one thing, but you also have to finance your life somehow. You've become quite a good card player, and after a few drinks, the guys also spill all kinds of valuable information.
3. Neutral Mediator, Wed-Sat, 6pm-10pm, £420, Requirements: 2 Logic, 3 Charisma, 1 Body
You still prefer to stay on neutral ground and don't get involved in other people's disputes. Your reputation of being impartial has spread so far that you are now called upon to mediate in more harmless disputes tough. Also, after a few bar fights, you are now calm enough not to be afraid of your own shadow anymore.
4. Paid Informant, Wed-Sat, 6pm-10pm, £540, Requirements: 3 Logic, 4 Charisma, 3 Body
You know your way around the scene pretty well by now and have your ears everywhere. Word has gotten around among the ‘good guys’ too, and you can always expect a few quid when the Slayer or that Dark Knight show up at the bar. Those with dirty secrets try to hide them from you. Others are more violent by nature, so you'd better be in top shape to take to your heels if necessary.
5. Volunteer Informant, Wed-Sat, 5pm-10pm, £450, Requirements: 3 Logic, 4 Charisma, 3 Body, 1 Creativity, 1 Friend
The last time the Slayer needed information from you, you actually forgot to ask for payment. But the smile she gave you was almost reward enough. Of course, that's not good for your finances, but you can take a lamp or something from her basement every now and then.
6. Sidekick, Tue-Sat, 4pm-10pm, §510, Requirements: 4 Logic, 5 Charisma, 6 Body, 2 Creativity, 1 Friend
Despite her special powers, the Slayer often finds herself in trouble, and who has to rescue her? You've become quite unpopular in the demon community, which is why it's harder for you to get information. But you can't let the girl get hurt, can you?
7. Babysitter, Tue-Sat, 6pm-10pm, £570, Requirements: 4 Logic, 5 Charisma, 7 Body, 2 Creativity, 1 Cooking, 1 Cleaning, 2 Friends
That's what you get for being the good guy. More and more often, you have to look after the Slayer's friends and relatives. Why does she always have to mess with the tough guys? At least you've bought a television, so you can watch soap operas while you're babysitting.
8. Confidant, Tue-Sat, 5pm-10pm, £620, Requirements: 4 Logic, 6 Charisma, 8 Body, 3 Creativity, 1 Friend
You're not really ‘good’, but that's okay. Above all, you're the only one who really understands the Slayer. Even though she doesn't really like it, she keeps confiding in you. Otherwise, you're pretty much on your own. The demon community hates, fears and shuns you, and the good guys, especially the Watcher, regard you with undisguised dislike and contempt. Maybe you should work on your inter-‘personal‘ skills.
9. Semi-voluntary Hero, Tue-Sat, 4pm-10pm, £740, Requirements: 5 Logic, 8 Charisma, 9 Body, 4 Creativity, 3 Friends
Now you've actually saved the world. Well, at least you were involved. And it all started because you wanted to get into a bit of a fight. Are you good or evil now? Maybe you should take some time off to figure out who you really are.
10. Champion, Tue-Sat, 4pm-11pm, £970, Requirements: 5 Logic, 10 Charisma, 10 Body, 5 Creativity, 4 Friends
You've been through hell and now you have a soul. You try to do the right thing and always have to save the day. That makes you the Champion of the Slayer. You are entrusted with the most difficult tasks. Stay true to yourself in everything you do, then you can really make a difference.
Scenario 1 (Chicken)
A mate of yours has asked you to look after his crypt while he's away on some important mission. Of course, that doesn't mean you have to hang around there day and night. Do you want to stay there tonight and watch soap operas, or do you want to go to the bar and see if you can join a game of cat poker?
Solution A
Soap operas
Solution B
Cat poker
Result A p
There's a Passion marathon on and you're having a cosy evening. You eat loads of crisps and work out hard the next morning so you don't put on weight. You earn one body point.
Result A n
You want to watch the Passion marathon, but the Slayer bursts in. She wanted to ask your mate to look after her sister, a task that you now take on. Of course, the girl runs away and even though the Slayer finds her before anything worse happens, the incident has not done your reputation any good, either with the good guys or the bad guys. You lose one charisma point.
Result B p
You prove to be an extremely talented poker player and make a nice profit. You decide to play poker every weekend from now on.
Result B n
You win the first few games, but as the stakes get higher, you realise you've been cheated, because suddenly your opponents are playing much better. By the end of the evening, you've gambled away your entire capital.
Scenario 2 (Cat Poker Player)
The evening is going pretty badly, you lose one game after another. Soon you have no more kittens left. Do you want to borrow some tabbies from the loan shark or do you accept your losses and call it a day?
Solution A
Borrow kittens
Solution B
Accept losses
Result A p
Your losing streak is finally over and at the end of the evening you've made a nice profit. You quickly pay back your debts before the loan shark smells blood. Nevertheless, there's still something left over to put aside for a rainy day.
Result A n
You borrow a few kittens, but your losing streak continues. You'd better find a way to pay back your debts quickly before the loan shark smells blood.
Result B p
You accept your losses and call it a day. Besides, the lads were quite talkative today and you learned some interesting things. That should be worth something. Money, that is, because let's be honest, kittens are a completely ridiculous currency.
Result B n
You accept your losses and call it a day. For the time being, the crisps from the discount store will have to suffice.
Scenario 3 (Neutral Mediator)
You're hanging out in the bar, waiting to see if a poker game or something else interesting will come up, when the Slayer bursts in and “asks” the bartender for information. After the usual fuss, he comes up with the information. But you happen to know that the demon the Slayer is looking for left town two days ago. So why is the bartender sending the Slayer down into the sewers? The whole thing smells like a trap.
Solution A
Warn the Slayer
Solution B
Stay out of it
Result A p
You discreetly leave the bar, but wait outside for the Slayer. When you approach her, at first it looks like she wants to kill you. When you come clean, she doesn't seem to believe you. Nevertheless, you get the impression that she will approach the matter with the necessary caution. At least she lets you go. Next time, however, you will definitely insist on payment.
Result A n
You discreetly leave the bar, but wait outside for the Slayer. When you approach her, she knocks you unconscious without hesitation. You assume that it was an instinctive act and that she has nothing against you personally, after all, she refrains from finishing you off completely. Nevertheless, you lose one body point.
Result B p
This is none of your concern. Later, you happen to learn that you were correct and that it was indeed a trap, but the Slayer survived and is now quite upset with a certain bartender. He goes into hiding, leaving a position vacant. Since you spend most of your time at the bar anyway, you might as well get paid for it.
Result B n
This whole thing is none of your business. Nevertheless, you find it disturbing that even “neutral” places are no longer safe. You suspend your mediation activities until further notice and limit yourself to playing poker again.
Scenario 4 (Paid Informant)
A member of the Slayer’s small group of do-gooders shows up at the bar. He tries to act tough, but you can clearly see that he's only here because he has no choice. He obviously needs some information urgently. You could try to charge a little more than the usual rate, but then again, the Slayer might show up here, and that's always bad for business.
Solution A
Usual rate
Solution B
Get a bonus
Result A p
The Slayer's gang has proven to be a fairly stable source of income. You'd better keep them happy, and that won't work if you drive them into bankruptcy. You award yourself a logic point for this insight.
Result A n
You offer the information at the usual rate and the boy immediately accepts without even trying to negotiate. He must be really desperate. Now you feel like you've missed an opportunity and lose a logic point.
Result B p
The boy is really desperate. It would be foolish not to get everything you can out of him. Whether the Slayer's little gang can really do anything with your information is questionable, but ultimately it doesn't matter to you. In any case, you're a few quid richer.
Result B n
You should have listened to your instincts. You asked for more than the boy had on him, and two hours later the Slayer shows up to get the information out of you by other means. You can take the beating, but some things get broken and of course you have to pay for the damage.
Scenario 5 (Volunteer Informant)
You've heard that the Slayer is throwing a party. Want to check it out? This could be your chance to get an invitation to her house, if not from the Slayer herself, then from her mum or her nosy little sister. It would certainly be advantageous for your business to be able to come and go as you please in this house, but it's just as likely that the Slayer will chase you away.
Solution A
Party animal
Solution B
Wallflower
Result A p
It can't hurt to try, right? However, when you arrive at the Slayer's house, you don't find the party atmosphere you expected, but a house full of zombies. Demon or not, you've never liked zombies, and you help the Slayer clean up this unsavoury mess. She doesn't exactly throw her arms around you in joy afterwards, but you still feel like you've significantly improved your relationship with her.
Result A n
It can't hurt to try, right? When you arrive at the Slayer's house, you realise that this is by no means a typical teenage party and that there are already some strange characters joining in the celebrations. For some reason, however, the Slayer won't let you in. You leave empty-handed and lose one charisma point.
Result B p
What do you want at a party full of human teenagers? Instead, you spend a nice evening at the bar. During the obligatory pub brawl, you earn a body point.
Result B n
What do you want at a party full of human teenagers? Instead, you spend the evening in front of the television. You don't really care about the charisma point you lose in the process.
Scenario 6 (Sidekick)
The Slayer is in trouble again. It must be Tuesday. However, she treated you pretty badly when you last met. Do you still want to help her out of her predicament, or should she see how she gets on without you?
Solution A
Help her
Solution B
Don't help her
Result A p
You help the Slayer out of trouble again and, as usual, you arrive at the last moment to prevent the worst from happening. And then a miracle happens. She actually apologises to you. You can hardly believe it and float home on cloud nine, with one more charisma point.
Result A n
You help the Slayer out of trouble again and, as usual, you arrive at the last moment to prevent the worst, only to be told afterwards that you should stay away from her. Oh, very well. But then she can pay for her information like everyone else.
Result B p
She really brought this trouble on herself. You spend a cosy evening at home and wait. Sooner or later, she'll come crawling back anyway. You award yourself a logic point for this insight.
Result B n
She really brought this trouble on herself. You spend a cosy evening at home and wait. When you find out the next day that the Slayer is in hospital, you feel guilty and lose a charisma point. And then you lose another charisma point because you're angry with yourself. A guilty conscience? Since when did you have a conscience?
Scenario 7 (Babysitter)
Today, the Slayer is dropping off not only her little sister, but also her mum at your place. She must be in a really bad spot. Do you want to look after her family, or help the Slayer with her problem in a more direct way? After all, it's been a while since you've had a good fight.
Solution A
Babysitter
Solution B
Fighter
Result A p
As she looks you in the eye and tells you that you're the only one strong enough to protect her family, you can't help but promise her that everything will be fine. It feels unexpectedly good to be needed like this, and you gain a charisma point.
Result A n
You reluctantly agree to play the babysitter again. Although you actually get along quite well with the Slayer's mum and watch soap operas together, the whole situation doesn't really fit your self-image. You lose one charisma point.
Result B p
You organise a replacement babysitter and follow the Slayer to her oh-so-important fight. In fact, you arrive at the last moment to prevent it from actually being the Slayer's last moment. She is grateful to you and you gain a charisma point. Nevertheless, she insists that you now look after her family. You admit defeat and spend the rest of the day watching Passions with the Slayer's mum.
Result B n
You organise a replacement babysitter, but the Slayer's sister runs away from him. During the ensuing rescue mission, you take a beating and lose one body point. At least you manage to get the girl to promise not to tell her sister anything.
Scenario 8 (Confidant)
The Slayer has confided in you about why she has been so distracted lately and distancing herself from her friends. The spell that brought her back to life did not free her from a terrible hell, but tore her from heaven. What advice will you give her?
Solution A
‘Live one day at a time.’
Solution B
‘Run away with me.’
Result A p
Although it's a platitude, it seems to cheer her up. Maybe it's just the fact that she finally has someone she can confide in. You gain a Charisma point for being that someone.
Result A n
It is pure platitude and has the corresponding effect. The Slayer forces you to promise never to tell anyone and then leaves you standing there. You lose one charisma point.
Result B p
The Slayer smiles at you. For a moment, she actually seems to consider it, and you gain one Charisma point. Of course, she then shakes her head and tells you that she has to stay. Nevertheless, she seems to feel a little better, if only because she can finally confide in someone.
Result B n
For trying to take advantage of her vulnerable state, the Slayer knocks you down and beats you until you lose consciousness. You lose two Charisma points and one Body point.
Scenario 9 (Semi-voluntary Hero)
The Slayer has concocted yet another plan. And as usual, it’s a completely brainless, downright ridiculously risky plan. Really, according to the laws of probability, the Slayer should have died at least three times by now. Oh, and of course, the plan depends entirely on you.
Solution A
Go along with it... as always.
Solution B
Take off.
Result A p
It's not like you really have a choice at this point, is it? So you go along with this completely insane venture, and miraculously, you both survive. Well, at least this time she's appropriately grateful.
Result A n
It's not like you really have a choice at this stage, is it? So you join in with this completely insane undertaking and, miraculously, you both survive. Well, sort of, because you spend the next few weeks in a coma. When you wake up, you've lost four body points.
Result B p
This time, you have a feeling that things will definitely end badly. However, the Slayer refuses to be persuaded to reconsider. At least she understands that you don't want to sacrifice yourself for her and asks you to look after her sister again instead. Miraculously, the Slayer survives her suicide attempt. Of course, you're happy and gain a charisma point, but it will take you quite a while to regain her favour.
Result B n
This time, you have a feeling that things will definitely end badly. However, the Slayer refuses to be persuaded to reconsider. In any case, you make your escape. Miraculously, she survives her suicide attempt. Of course, you are glad, but it will take you quite a while to regain her favour.
Scenario 10 (Champion)
Once again, the world is on the brink of destruction. Really, the world has been ending alarmingly often lately, almost every year and always just before the summer holidays, as if someone or something is determined to ruin people's holidays. And as if that weren't annoying enough, the Slayer's ex shows up and brings some stupid artefact with him, but it has to be wielded by someone stronger than a human. Obviously, he means himself. Are you going to let him get away with it? Or do you trust the Slayer to make the right choice?
Solution A
Show him, who's the Champion here.
Solution B
Trust the Slayer.
Result A p
‘Oh, look at me. I'm such a hero with my dark expression and stupid hair.’ You just can't stand the guy. Fortunately, the Slayer seems to be over him too, because she doesn't protest when you take the bling off the dandy. Once the danger has been averted and the amulet has served its purpose, you also sell it to the Watchers’ Council for a tidy sum.
Result A n
‘Oh, look at me. I'm such a hero with my dark expression and stupid hair.’ You just can't stand the guy. You take the bling off the dandy and immediately burst into flames. You quickly drop the amulet. The smug grin the guy gives you is almost worse than the burns. You lose one body point and one charisma point.
Result B p
You trust that the Slayer will make the right choice. She takes her time, but of course she chooses you. Once the danger has been averted and the amulet has served its purpose, you also sell it to the Watchers’ Council for a tidy sum.
Result B n
You trust that the Slayer will make the right choice. She takes her time, and finally decides... on him! You didn't think it would affect you so much and lose two Charisma points.
One more thing if you decide to play this career with an anti-heroine. Even though the chance cards are based on Spike to a certain extent, I have tried to leave it as open as possible as to whether your Sim enters into a romantic and/or sexual relationship with the Slayer. Nevertheless, some of the texts may work a little better if your female Sim is at least bi-curious.
