Joandsarah77 is currently hosting a foundation challenge contest. While I jumped in on it as fast as I could, the 20 spots available filled up super fast, so I'm only going to be able to do a play-along. That's fine. I like breaking the rules too much.

For the first round, she gave us a foundation and a family to build for, and a budget of $25k. She mentioned allowing us to use the CFE cheat to raise or lower our foundations, and that's what got me thinking about a taller building. Unfortunately, it is very against the rules to remove a piece of foundation, as it's a Foundation Challenge, after all, so even removing a few interior pieces to make way for a stairs is a no-go.

Well, I wasn't about to give up on my dream that fast. By this time the spots had started to fill up, so I decided to go all out and not worry about competing in the contest, and build the apartment building in my head anyways. My downtown neighborhoods are distinctly lacking in this older shorter style of apartment buildings, so that's my plan for the entire contest. A nice little set of four apartment buildings will be a nice addition to any downtown, don't you think?

Now, I still want to do the play-along for the contest, so I need to follow the rules as best as I can. I've stayed true to the foundation (super important!), but since this isn't a single family home and instead is a 4 apartment building, I decided it was fair to quadruple my budget. Let me tell you, staying under $100,000 for these taller buildings is still really tough! I'm a sucker for fire escapes, so that's where I started. I'm really pleased with how this iteration of a fire escape came out. I am going for the older style of apartment buildings, before they shot 80 floors into the air, so old looking architecture and details like fire escapes and exposed pipes are necessary.

These are meant as starter apartments, so while you have everything you need to get going, they aren't fancy at all. I thought that fit in quite nicely with the theme. Each of the four apartments is entirely identical, they all cost exactly $1467 to rent. The family we were given (the Walters, it's where the name of the building came from) is supposed to be expecting a baby, so I made a version that is still exactly the same price, but the second bedroom is a nursery. Check out my post in the contest thread to see how I did that.

The common room on the ground floor is much sparser than I'd like, but I just could not squeeze any more out of my budget. Since you all won't have that issue, add some rough looking couches and maybe a coffee machine to it when you get it in your game? Also, the bathtubs these apartments were meant to have are the stupidly expensive claw-foot shower/tub combo unit, but I didn't have it in my budget. Maybe you have it in yours?

Enjoy!
