Somehow a big central police station never managed to capture my interest or attention until I added in a little Gotham City flavor, and the end result is what you see before you! The central bullpen is heavily inspired by the police station from the TV show “Gotham” but it’s not a direct copy, and the rest of the building is just a deliberate mix of realistic offices you’d expect to find in a central police station overlain with a bit of gothic noir flavor!

A quick floor-by-floor overview: The basement includes locker rooms, utility rooms, an officer’s gymnasium, and space for the force’s K-9 unit and animal handlers. The first floor has a public lobby, the central bullpen which includes holding cells and a separate Commissioner’s office, and a private breakroom. The second floor includes the upper level of the bullpen, detectives’ offices, and a small commissary with a coffee bar. The third floor includes more specialized offices, including a sketch artist’s workshop, evidence lockup, forensics lab, regional 911 dispatch center, and interrogation room. Finally, the top two accessible floors make up an attic space, with lots of random storage boxes and utility spaces, and a few nooks and crannies that have been repurposed by the building’s occupants.

I’ve extensively playtested a clone of this building to ensure no routing errors or other major red flags are still present, so there shouldn’t be anything to keep you from being able to add this lot directly into your game. This lot clone was also what I used for the screenshots that include Sims- the uploaded file has never been occupied in-game.

As is usually the case with my lots, this is a large building, with many playable floors and lots of decoration on a 5x3 lot, and a total value of $786,231. There should only be one NPC generated though (the commissary barista), so that does help some with lag when loading this building in game. As is also always the case, I’ve used no CC here, so as long as you have all the EPs and SPs, you should be in good shape! If you DO encounter any problems, please let me know and I’ll try to address them if I can, and I think with that I’ve covered all the basic technical aspects of this lot.

If you would like more though, you can read the following vignette, of one of SimCity’s hardboiled police detectives working late into the night at this station!

Detective Hart had been on his feet for 47 hours as night fell, but the dockside operation had been a success. Thanks to the coordinated efforts of the police department, harbor patrol, and federal bureaus, as well as a number of anonymous tips, they’d successfully busted a major smuggling and racketeering ring that had grown up in the abandoned warehouses and freight yards that lined the west side of the river. They’d even managed to time the operation right and taken down an illegal fight club that had been taking place on the upper floors of one of the warehouses, and now squad cars and police wagons were streaming back across the bridges into the city center with dozens of arrested suspects handcuffed in the back, headed for processing.

Hart waited as the first round of suspects was escorted up to the interrogation rooms upstairs, and watched as the prisoners who would have to wait to be interrogated were led into the station’s holding cells. Only once the cell door had been closed and locked with a great metallic CLANG did he head over to his desk in the station’s central bullpen, beginning the lengthy process of documenting the night’s events into his report files. Every few minutes another squad car arrived back at the station and uniformed and plainclothes officers would lead another cuffed suspect into the cells, until finally all the suspects they’d managed to apprehend were safely behind bars or in interrogation.

Even though the operation had finished late in the evening to begin with, Hart still had hours of work to do when the ornate clock over Commissioner Cadden’s office struck midnight, and there were plenty of other officers in the same boat. The dispatchers coming down at the end of their shifts after the midnight shift change in the dispatch center upstairs passed through on their way out, congratulating a few of the officers who’d been prominent parts of the investigation leading up to the night’s operation. Tuning out the conversation and the clamor of the still-full holding cells, Hart continued with his paperwork, now beginning the arduous process of reviewing the evidence logs for anything that seemed to tie this bust to another ongoing investigation.

After an hour or so, he flagged an evidence report on a small token that had been seized among the betting slips and wagers. A small emblem of a crowned llama was printed on one side, and the other side was left conspicuously blank- Hart stared at it intently for a few moments, and then made up his mind that this one small coin had to take priority. Locking his workstation and marking his place on the endless list of evidence, he headed to the elevator and up to the third floor and the forensics lab.

Even after midnight Hart wasn’t surprised to see the lights of the forensics lab were still on- Dr. Tempest often worked late even on a normal day, and with as much evidence coming in as there was this night, she would undoubtedly be completely swamped. The commissioner had repeatedly tried to get her to stick to a more consistent schedule and fill things in with backup staff, but he had to admit that there was no way they’d get through anywhere close to number of analyses Tempest managed. Hart opened the door and saw her bent over a microscope on one of the study tables, but at the sound of the door she quickly looked up and saw him.

“What have you got for me Detective? It must be important to pull you away from your own desk at this hour!” She pushed away from the microscope and walked over towards the door. Hart held up the evidence baggie with the token. “This sure looks to me like it’s from the Llama King’s operation, and if it is, obviously that’s gonna change things, so I wanted to get your take on it before I make any additional report.” Dr. Tempest took the bag and held it up to the light, scrutinizing it briefly. “Well, at first glance I’d say you’re right, but let’s take a closer look!” She recorded the evidence as removed for analysis and after a quick glance under the microscope, headed over to some of the more specialized forensic equipment in the lab. “Could take a few hours, but I’ll let you know what I find as soon as I’ve got any results!” Tempest said to Hart over her shoulder.

Detective Hart finally left his desk after reviewing evidence from the night’s operation until almost 4:00am, and many other officers were still hunched over their computers or paperwork as he rose. This late there wasn’t much point in going home, since he figured he’d just have to be back in the station in a few hours anyway, so he headed into the breakroom off the bullpen. A few other officers were there, either grabbing a few moments’ sleep between shifts or else just continuing with paperwork in a different location for a while, and between not wanting to disturb them and seeing that the breakroom coffeepot was distressingly empty, Hart turned and headed upstairs towards the commissary instead.

The coffee here was still readily available, but just as he stepped through the commissary doors, Hart was flagged down by Dr. Tempest stepping off the elevator. “You were right, I ran a micro-spectral chemical analysis of the token and it matches more than a dozen compounds we’ve identified at other crime scenes associated with the Llama King’s operations. I already told the commissioner and he said that one of the suspects arrested last night had confessed in interrogation to being a go-between for the Llama King... what do you want to do now?”

Detective Hart let out a long sigh. He’d expected this was a possibility once he’d realized the sheer scale of the operation they’d broken up last night- nothing like that could be pulled off without including someone like the Llama King in the planning. “Log it into evidence as likely related to any other open case files with the Llama King as a possible suspect... not much more we can do. But I have a hunch the Commissioner’s masked friend might take an interest too...” Dr. Tempest laughed, glancing up at the dark sky out the window as if she half-expected to see a costumed vigilante swooping down out of the night... stranger things had definitely happened before in SimCity.
