We see a lot of the US east and west coasts in The Sims but hardly any of the midwest!

Contrary to what appears when you search Images for "typical midwestern house", houses of this type are far more common. 5447 Cornhusker Street features the front porch of the house across the road from me, the detached garage of the house I used to live in, and the exterior form of a house near the library (the same library I based the earlier Gubler-Dochney Branch on, incidentally). While I've never been into that house, I imagine it looks quite a bit like this; like it was built in the early '60s and renovated in the mid-'70s.
