Chapter 11

Dear Diary,

I’ve turned to you again! Yesterday was one of the worst days of my life! I almost got raped, I witnessed the way Sebastien got beaten up, I got screamed at and Brandon stood me up! It was pretty nasty and I eventually cried myself to sleep. But today was different, diary! I’ve made a promise to myself to never be so shallow again and never let myself be trampled on. And you know what? My crush over pretty-face Brandon is done! Over! Kaput! You heard me right. This whole thing just opened my eyes! He is good looking, but that’s about all he has, no smarts no kindness, no nothing! And he’s a jerk! But I got my revenge! Let me just tell you what happened today!

Shadee stared again at the back of Brandon’s head, but this time her eyes were narrowed to slits. She was quite angry because of the way he had treated her the previous day. And all the weird names he had called her were making matters even worse.

‘Shanti!’ she snorted, barely audible ‘Shaniqua!’

‘Shadee, are you okay?’ Holly faced her, looking a little worried.

‘I’ve never been, better, Holly!’ she whispered back, smiling friendly ‘And I think you’re going to be quite satisfied when I tell you that my stupid crush is officially over!’

In a low tone, to not be spotted by the teacher, Shadee told her friend the whole thing with Brandon.

‘And he didn’t even let me finish!’ she breathed angrily.

‘I’ve always told you he’s scum.’ Holly shook her head.

The bell rang, everyone getting up quickly and heading for the cafeteria as it was lunch break. Shadee waited a few seconds on her chair, staring in the distance, then smiled and got up briskly.

‘You know what, Holly?’ she asked practically grinning ‘I’m gonna do this!’

‘Do what?’ her friend began, but it was too late. Shadee had already dashed out of the door and out of sight. Holly got up too and ran out, trying to catch up with her. She skidded to a halt, stopping just in time to avoid colliding with the girl.

‘Hey, Brandon!’ Shadee shouted to the blond figure in front of her flanked by Jae and Shichiro.

The boy stopped walking and turned around, revealing his dazzling smile yet again.

‘What’s up babe?’ he asked casually, giving Jae a nudge that clearly meant “this chick is crazy about me”.

‘First of all, do not call me “babe”!’ she spat, narrowing her eyes. Brandon seemed quite taken aback by her reaction.

‘Oh, I-’

‘I wasn’t finished! Second of all, I wanted to tell you that I started to write the project.’

‘That’s good!’ he grinned, winking seductively.

‘No it’s not, at least not for you.’ Shadee answered, tilting her head to one side ‘You see, I only did my half of it and my schedule is so full for the rest of the week that I really can’t squeeze your half in it! You’ll have to do it yourself, babe!’

With that she turned on her heel and headed for the staircase leading downstairs. Still, she was able to hear a female voice bark indignantly “Who was that and why was she calling you “babe”?!?”

‘I have to say…’ Holly laughed, walking next to her ‘it’s the first time that I can actually say I’m proud of you!’

They found themselves a table and settled down for lunch, gossiping and making fun of Brandon and the sheepish expression he had made, being caught off-guard.

‘Hey, look there.’ Whispered Holly pointing to a table somewhere behind Shadee, at the very end of the hall.

Sebastien was all alone again, sitting at the dirtiest and loneliest table. A closer look showed Shadee that Sebastien was sporting a big, ugly and swollen black eye. This must have been the punishment he had had to endure after his father had woken up. Shadee sighed and watched him play absent mindedly with his food, one of his fists supporting his right jaw.

‘I think there is yet another thing I should have done before.’ She said slowly, turning to Holly ‘I am a real idiot for not having done this earlier!’

‘What is it this time?’ a quick look at Shadee and then a glance at Sebastien and everything became clear ‘Shadee, what the heck are you doing?!’ she whispered desperately, watching her friend get up ‘He’s too weird! What if he’s a killer and he’ll slaughter us if we get to know him too well? Shadee!’

By the time Holly had stopped blabbering, Shadee was already halfway across the hall. Some curious people turned their heads around to see what was happening with the “weirdo”.

‘Hi.’ Shadee smiled, and made for the chair opposite to Sebastien.

He looked up at her inquiringly and muttered a barely audible “What do you want?”, but Shadee distinctly saw a glitter of happiness shoot through his eyes.

‘Listen, I’m gonna cut all the mumbo jumbo and go directly to the subject!’ she started firmly, catching Sebastien’s full attention ‘I like you! You’re a nice person. Even though you pretend to be all tough and don’t like people trying to become your friends, I don’t give a d*amn! I know that’s only a shield to protect you from harm! Don’t go around denying that! What I want you to do is come over to our table and have lunch with us! Is that really too much to ask?’

Sebastien threw her a puzzled look, his brow furrowed and Shadee expected him to start yelling again at any point. But then, quite clearly, a faint smile crept upon his lips.

That day, a new era began. From then onwards, Shadee, Holly and Sebastien became inseparable, a small group of three people that couldn’t be more different from each other, but learned to understand each other’s feelings, wants and dislikes and make them their own.
