Chapter 12

‘Darn! I’m gonna be late again!’

Eighteen year old Shadee quickly applied a thick layer of lip gloss before eyeing herself up in the reflection of the mirror.

She hadn’t changed much in the past four years, even though she could almost consider herself a woman now, at the end of her senior year in highschool. The same could be said about her Grandma actually. She was still the beautiful, radiant lady that had welcomed her warmly in the house, the place that had become Shadee’s second home.

On the other hand though, grandfather Menas had changed a lot. The pain in his legs he had accused before had intensified and he had to spend all his time resting on the bed, or moving around in a wheel chair. A visit to the doctor’s revealed that he would no longer be able to use his legs in the near future. This was a hard blow for him, as he had been an active person his whole life. The bad news had changed his appearance, wrinkles covering his face and making him look much older than he actually was.

The other member of this unusual family had also changed: little Caleb had grown up very quickly much to the dismay of his elderly adoptive parents. They could still remember the bundle of joy as he had shakily made his first steps, mumbled his first words and finally ceased to consider the diapers the natural place to poop in.

He had grown into a cute and shy little boy, now attending his first school year.

The friendship between Shadee, Holly and Sebastien had also “grown” in its way. They always shared their secrets, feelings and thoughts and they were honest with each other.

Having found people that actually wanted to be his friends had also changed the grumpy, moody Sebastien into a relaxed young man with a very charming attitude; a thing that actually paid off in their junior year when a quite pretty girl had hooked up with him. It was a very nice and satisfying experience until Sebastien found out that he was sharing his girlfriend with half of the school’s male population. A nasty exchange of retorts, then the break-up followed. In the end though, it proved to have been a good experience for him, especially for his “natural instincts”. He was also no longer despised in his class or in the highschool, as there were now two people that cared for him and stood up for him in front of the jerks.

Holly on the other hand hadn’t been that lucky in her love life. From Shadee’s point of view though, it had nothing to do with her appearance, more with the fact that she didn’t trust herself and always got too shy around people of the opposite sex. Still, with the constant nagging from Shadee’s part she hadn’t missed any of the gym classes and had managed to loose thirty kilograms over the past four years. She didn’t look like a super model, but that wasn’t even possible as she had a totally different build. But she now felt healthier and could actually run almost five hundred meters without loosing her breath. She had also been through a few makeovers with Shadee’s help: changing glasses with contacts, eyebrows plucking and use of a minimal amount of make-up. Her shyness though was something that would take more time to cure.

That evening, Shadee had a date. Dirk Hamilton had been her boyfriend for almost one year and, even though he was a member of the school’s football team, he was quite a nice guy.

He had never cheated on Shadee, nor had he pushed things when the girl had stated she wasn’t ready to take their relationship to the next level. Still, he had one flaw that constantly earned Shadee ironic comments from her two best friends: he wasn’t exactly the brightest in his class, or his year for that matter. He was actually stupid. Good natured, but stupid. Leaving that aside, his relationship with Shadee had propelled the girl’s social status – and her friends’ – and they were no longer among the “weird” gangs, they were now labeled as normal. Also, given the fact that Dirk was a good looking and well built guy, Shadee suddenly found herself the target of nasty comments and constant gossiping. She got over the experience quite good though and learned to never trust rumors or take everything too serious.

‘Gran, are you in here?’ Shadee whispered, barely cracking open the door to her grandparents’ bedroom. Not receiving any answer, the girl headed for the back garden, where she finally found Gypsy staring into the night sky.

‘Gran, I’m leaving.’ She gingerly put a hand on her grandmother’s shoulder ‘I won’t be out too late, okay?’

‘Ok, honey!’ Gypsy smiled and patted her granddaughter’s smooth hand ‘Have fun!’

Shadee nodded, even though she knew her grandmother couldn’t see that. Turning on her heel, she walked down the path, past her beautiful new car she had received on her eighteenth birthday. She decided to walk to the place she was going to meet Dirk. They wanted to celebrate the fact that they had almost finished their last year of highschool and maybe have a few drinks; driving wasn’t the best thing to do while drunk.
