Chapter 16

Shadee let her brush slide gently down the smooth canvas, continuing the painting she had started that morning. There had been three days since the “mall incident” and she had actually lost touch with both Holly and Seb. Even though they had tried to reach her like mad the previous days, Shadee refused to return their calls and simply decided to step back and leave them some time alone.



She could feel her eyes getting wet with tears as she applied another layer of emerald green on the two spots where Sebastien’s eyes would soon be. Even though she couldn’t have the man she loved next to her, she could simply have his painting, which was filled with emotions unlike a simple photograph.

There was a soft knock on the door and Gypsy’s head peered through the cracked door.

‘Shadee, honey, it’s Miss Dora on the phone. She has some urgent matters to discuss with you.’



Raising her eyebrows, the girl took the phone from her grandmother’s hand and muttered a faint “Yes?” in the receiver. On the other end of the line, a very familiar voice blurted out.

‘What the heck is wrong with you, Shadee?!’ Holly seemed exasperated ‘You ignored us for the rest of the weekend, you didn’t show up at school today, you didn’t bother to return my and Seb’s calls and I had to ask your grandmother to lie for me, just so I could actually talk to you!’

‘I’m sorry…’ Shadee answered back halfheartedly ‘But I only did this for the two of you, so you could be alone together and…you know…’



‘But – but…there is no need for that. You have to stay with us! It gets really weird when you’re not there and – and on top of that we have to plan everything for Saturday! It’s the prom, Shadee!’ Holly finished excitedly.

The girl sighed with relief, even though she felt a twinge of guilt at the thought that she still won’t be able to get over the fact that she loved the same man as her best friend.

‘You know what?’ Holly’s cheerful voice rang from the other end of the line again ‘I’m gonna grab Sebastien and we’ll come over to your place after school today, if that’s okay with you, of course. We have a lot to catch up with!’

‘Sure you can.’ The girl answered back smiling widely, even though she know Holly couldn’t see her ‘I’ll just fix some treats for you and we can hang out in my room.’

‘OK then, wait for us! Oh, and Seb says “hi”!’

Putting the phone back into the hook, Shadee felt a thousand times better than a few moments before.
