This is the second in a series of three modern homes I built with my architect Sim as inspiration. I like to imagine he designed them, which is why they share similar features. This home was built for his best friend, a nature enthusiast who dreams of being a Hall of Famer.

In real life, it was inspired by a house plan I saw when I was looking for a picture of the plan I used for the architect's house. I liked the boxy shape and the small size. But it felt closed off and lacked a feeling of space, which I believe you can achieve even in the smallest house.

The modern feel of this home has been toned down a bit with paint choices and the use of more traditional furnishings. But by adding your own "custom" touches, you can make it as ultra modern as you and your Sims like. Just take your cue from the stainless steel kitchen and go from there.

It has a compact open floor plan, with the kitchen just feet from the living area. Behind the kitchen is a small bath, and across the hall is a bedroom with room for a desk. I was trying to keep the interior tight and efficient, so there's no dining room. But the kitchen has a breakfast bar that seats four.

I had a patio dining set for a while, but my Sim took all his meals out there. It was okay when the weather was nice but got a little annoying when it stormed or snowed. I tried enclosing the patio with windows all around and the effect was dramatic, but the house lost it's modern appeal. Eventually I got rid of the patio set.

By opening up the back of the house I was able to bring in more natural light. It also contributes to the feeling of space by giving the eye a view instead of a wall to look at. And, of course, because it's a door, you can walk through it to the outside. This is how you bring the outdoors in. And the pool and patio area offers a great place to entertain or just hang out in nice weather.

As with all the lots in this small series of modern homes, it's all about the architecture, so the landscaping is minimal, with nothing to block the view or interfere with the clean lines. What landscaping is there, is designed to compliment the architecture and draw attention to it.

You could place this lot in any neighborhood, but it would make a perfect downtown dwelling. I can almost see the chainlink fence separating it from the neighbors.
