Samurai and Gladiator Careers
Added a career based upon the Imperial Chinese court, with Wuxia/Xianxia elements. The Imperial Chinese court career takes place in the City Hall Rabbit Hole. This career cannot be used at the same time as the Samurai career, so please use only one at a time. The Gladiator career can be used freely with any other career.
This mod adds two new custom Antiquity-era themed careers to the game: A Samurai Career and a Gladiator Career. Both Careers have ten levels.
Surviving in Roman society can be tough, and one way to ensure your survival is to join the Roman Military. Enlisting as a Legionary in the Empire’s many Legions will allow you to hopefully climb the ranks and maybe gain power in the Senate. Who knows? Sway enough ambitious senators and loyal guards to your side, and one day you might even rule as Emperor! – Gladiator Career Description
The life of a Samurai is appealing to many: the power, prestige, and perhaps most importantly the honour that is bestowed upon oneself by taking up this most ancient and noble of traditions. But the road is difficult, and full of dangers: only by the most rigorous training coupled with constant vigilance can one hope to become the greatest of Samurai lords. Will you take the path of that leads to the Chrysanthemum Throne itself, and become the Emperor, or will you follow the monastic path, and become a warrior monk instead? – Samurai Career Description
Rabbitholes: The Gladiator career is situated in the Stadium rabbithole, while the Samurai career is situated in the Military Base rabbithole.
Work Tones (Gladiator and Samurai):
- Business as Usual
- Maintain Law and Order (Work Hard)
- Relax in the Barracks
- Hang Out with co-workers
- Train in the Arena (Increases Athletics skill) (*Requires a higher level)
- Practice Horse Riding (Increases Riding skill) (*Requires a higher level)
Level 1: Peasant
Wages: §17 per hour - Work Days: Mon, Tue, Wed, Thur - Work Hours: 7AM to 2PM
A peasant is a pre-industrial agricultural laborer or a farmer with limited land-ownership, especially one living in the Middle Ages under feudalism and paying rent, tax, fees, or services to a landlord. In medieval times, three classes of peasants existed: non-free slaves, semi-free serfs, and free tenants. As a peasant, you must serve your lordship, toiling in the fields and paying taxes to those that have power over you, but with enough effort you may even be able to rise above your station and seek glory and power in feudal society.
Level 2: Town Guard
Wages: §28 per hour - Work Days: Mon, Tue, Wed, Fri - Work Hours: 7AM to 2PM
You’ve enrolled in the local Town Militia, as glory on the battlefield is the best chance you have of securing a knighthood. But first, you must do your part in service of protecting the town: As a town miltiaman you will patrol the town’s streets during the day, constantly on the look out for petty theives, lawbreakers, and (in rare occasions) attacks from bandits and raiders. In the event of an invasion of the town, you will be called into action to help defend the people, and lay down your life in the first line of defence if needed. Town Militia are poorly-armoured and poorly-equipped, so it’s not an easy position to be in.
Level 3: Roman Legionary
Wages: §32 per hour - Work Days: Mon, Tue, Wed, Fri - Work Hours: 7AM to 2PM
The Roman legionary is a citizen soldier of the Roman army. These soldiers would conquer and defend the territories of ancient Rome, alongside auxiliary and cavalry detachments. At its height, Roman legionaries were viewed as the foremost fighting force in the Roman world, with commentators such as praising their fighting effectiveness centuries after the classical Roman legionary disappeared. Roman legionaries are recruited from Roman citizens under age 45. First predominantly made up of recruits from Roman Italy, more were recruited from the provinces as time went on. As legionaries move into newly conquered provinces, they help Romanize the native population and help integrate the disparate regions of the Roman Empire into one polity. Enlisting in a legion for 25 years of service, legionaries are expected to fight, but they also built much of the infrastructure of the Roman Empire and served as a policing force in the provinces. They built large public works projects, such as walls and roads.
Level 4: Centurion
Wages: §40 per hour - Work Days: Mon, Tue, Wed, Fr - Work Hours: 7AM to 2PM
Now you have been promoted to be a Centurion. In the Roman army a centurion is a commander, nominally of a century, a military unit originally consisting of 100 legionaries. A centurion is promoted for being an exemplary soldier and is then expected to become a strict commander of his subordinates, to lead his troops by example, and coordinate his Century's actions. In a Roman legion, centuries were grouped into cohorts and commanded by the most senior centurion. Centurions could be elected, appointed by the Senate, or promoted from the ranks for a variety of reasons. Julius Caesar is said to have promoted his centurions for displays of valour. Historians cite examples of them being the first over the enemy's wall or through the breach.
Level 5: Gladiator Initiate
Wages: §60 per hour - Work Days: Mon, Wed, Fri - Work Hours: 7AM to 2PM
Your military unit was just destroyed in a battle, you were captured by the enemy and sold into slavery as a gladiator! But fear not, you can still escape this grim fate, if you fight hard enough you can buy your freedom and re-enter Roman society. You have been put into the novice gladiator fighting pits by your new master, and must fight to survive and win the admiration of the crowd. A gladiator (from the Latin word gladius, or sword) is an armed combatant who entertains audiences in the Roman Republic and Roman Empire in violent confrontations with other gladiators, wild animals, and condemned criminals. Some gladiators were volunteers who risked their lives and their legal and social standing by appearing in the arena. Most were despised as slaves, schooled under harsh conditions, socially marginalized, and segregated even in death.
Level 6: Gladiator
Wages: §100 per hour - Work Days: Mon, Wed, Fri - Work Hours: 7AM to 2PM
Irrespective of their origin (whether a free competitor or a slave), gladiators offered spectators an example of Rome's martial ethics and, in fighting or dying well, they could inspire admiration and popular acclaim. They were celebrated in high and low art, and their value as entertainers was commemorated in precious and commonplace objects throughout the Roman world. Gladiatorial games offered their sponsors extravagantly expensive but effective opportunities for self-promotion, and gave their clients and potential voters exciting entertainment at little or no cost to themselves Gladiators became big business for trainers and owners, for politicians on the make and those who had reached the top and wished to stay there. All prospective gladiators, whether volunteer or condemned, were bound to service by a sacred oath (sacramentum). Novices (novicii) trained under teachers of particular fighting styles, probably retired gladiators.
Level 7: Elite Gladiator
Wages: §172 per hour - Work Days: Mon, Wed, Thur, Fri - Work Hours: 7AM to 2PM
You are a fan-favourite gladiator in the arena, and are close to being able to buy your freedom! The trade in gladiators was empire-wide, and subjected to official supervision. Rome's military success produced a supply of soldier-prisoners who were redistributed for use in State mines or amphitheatres and for sale on the open market. In Rome's military ethos, enemy soldiers who had surrendered or allowed their own capture and enslavement had been granted an unmerited gift of life. Their training as gladiators would give them opportunity to redeem their honour in the games. Two other sources of gladiators, found increasingly during the Principate and the relatively low military activity of the Pax Romana, were slaves condemned to the arena (damnati), to gladiator schools or games as punishment for crimes, and the paid volunteers. For the poor, and for non-citizens, enrollment in a gladiator school offered a trade, regular food, housing of sorts and a fighting chance of fame and fortune.
These levels branch off from Level 7 of the "Gladiator" Career
Level 8: Roman Senator
Wages: §180 per hour - Work Days: Mon, Wed, Thur, Fri - Work Hours: 9AM to 1PM
You were able to buy your freedom from Gladiatorial servitude, and have managed to find a way into the Roman Senate. Here you can use your Charisma to sway allies to your side and gain power for yourself. The Roman Senate is the highest and constituting assembly of ancient Rome and its aristocracy. The Senate was the governing and advisory assembly of the aristocracy in the ancient Roman Republic. It was not an elected body, but one whose members were appointed by the consuls, and later by the censors, which were appointed by the aristocratic Centuriate Assembly.
Level 9: Roman Praetor
Wages: §277 per hour - Work Days: Mon, Wed, Thur, Fri - Work Hours: 9AM to 1PM
A Praetor is a senior magistrate in ancient Roman government, who is granted executive or imperium powers similar to that of the consuls. Although originally assigned legal authority over the courts, his executive powers allowed him to command the army and, if needed, even preside over the Roman Senate. Candidates usually had to serve as a praetor before they could stand election to the consulship.
Level 10: Emperor of Rome
Wages: §460 per hour - Work Days: Mon, Wed, Thur, Fri - Work Hours: 9AM to 1PM
You have managed to stage a successful rebellion and took control of the Empire from the current Emperor, and now rule Rome as its new Emperor! The legitimacy of an emperor's rule depended on his control of the Roman army and recognition by the Senate; an emperor would normally be proclaimed by his troops, or by the Senate, or both. The office of emperor was thought to be distinct from that of a rex (king). For the first three hundred years of Roman emperors, efforts were made to portray the emperors as leaders of the Republic, fearing any association with the kings who ruled Rome prior to the Republic. There were no true objective legal criteria for being acclaimed emperor beyond acceptance by the Roman army, which was really the true basis of imperial power. Common methods used by emperors to assert claims of legitimacy, such as support of the army, blood connections (sometimes fictitious) to past emperors, distributing one's own coins or statues, and claims to virtue through propaganda.
These levels branch off from Level 7 of the "Gladiator" Career
Level 8: Praetorian Spy
Wages: §180 per hour - Work Days: Mon, Wed, Thur, Fri - Work Hours: 9AM to 4PM
The speculatores, also known as the speculatores augusti or the exploratores, were an ancient Roman reconnaissance agency. They were part of the consularis and were used by the Roman military. This organization probably originated from previous Greek military spies and scouts. As a spy for the Praetorian Guard, you track down the enemies of the Emperor and make sure that any threats are eliminated. In some cases, it can even involve personally assassinating enemies yourself, to keep the dark secrets of the Praetorians secret and safe.
Level 9: Praetorian Guard
Wages: §277 per hour - Work Days: Mon, Wed, Thur, Fri - Work Hours: 9AM to 4PM
You were able to buy your freedom from Gladiatorial servitude, and have managed to find a way into service in the Praetorian Guard. The Praetorian Guard (Latin: cohortes praetoriae) is an elite unit of the Imperial Roman army that serves as personal bodyguards and intelligence agents for the Roman emperors. During the Roman Republic, the Praetorian Guards were escorts for high-ranking political officials (senators and procurators) and were bodyguards for the senior officers of the Roman legions. After Rome's transition from republic to empire, the first emperor of Rome, Augustus, designated the Praetorians as his personal security escort. For three centuries, the guards of the Roman emperor were also known for their palace intrigues, by whose influence upon imperial politics the Praetorians could overthrow an emperor and then proclaim his successor as the new caesar of Rome.
Level 10: Praetorian Prefect
Wages: §450 per hour - Work Days: Mon, Wed, Fri - Work Hours: 9AM to 4PM
You have been elevated to the highest level of the Praetorian Guard, and now manage it as the Prefect. The praetorian prefect is a high office in the Roman Empire. Originating as the commander of the Praetorian Guard, the office gradually acquired extensive legal and administrative functions, with its holders becoming the Emperor's chief aides.Under the empire the praetorians or imperial guards were commanded by one, two, or even three prefects who were chosen by the emperor from among Praetorians and held office at his pleasure.
Level 3: Ashigaru Infantryman
Wages: §32 per hour - Work Days: Mon, Tue, Wed, Fri - Work Hours: 7AM to 2PM
You’ve been called into the local levy military in service of your local Samurai, and now work as a soldier in their armies. Ashigaru are infantry employed by the samurai class of feudal Japan. During the Heian Period (794-1185 CE), Japan's system of a centralized military began to rapidly disintegrate with the rise of the warrior aristocracy. This left the creation and training of armies once again in the hands of powerful local lords. The ashigaru, which means "light-foot" or lightly armored, filled a growing need for enlisted warriors. They were the lowest class of warriors, commoners who were paid a stipend to enlarge a lord's local army. Because they essentially fight as contractors, the ashigaru often have to provide their own provisions and are not always as reliable as their commanders would have liked.
Level 4: Ashigaru Captain
Wages: §40 per hour - Work Days: Mon, Tue, Wed, Fr - Work Hours: 7AM to 2PM
You have been elevated to be a captain of the local force of Ashigaru soldiers, and now they look to you for command and guidance. The status of the ashigaru evolved dramatically in the fifteenth century, following the introduction of European firearms to Japanese warfare. The arquebus required very little training to operate properly, unlike the use of a bow, which was considered an art form. By equipping his many ashigaru with guns, a local daimyo could complement his samurai warriors with a constant and brutal ranged attack. Thus, the ashigaru quickly became indispensable.
Level 5: Hatamoto Bannerman
Wages: §60 per hour - Work Days: Mon, Wed, Fri - Work Hours: 7AM to 2PM
A hatamoto (Guardian of the banner) was a high ranking samurai in the direct service of the Tokugawa shogunate of feudal Japan. The term hatamoto was used for the direct retainers of a lord; as the name suggests, the men who were grouped ‘around of the flag’. In the eyes of the shogunate, hatamoto were retainers who had served the family from its daysn the context of an army, it could be compared to the position of an officer. Throughout the Edo period, hatamoto held the distinction that if they possessed high enough rank, they had the right to personal audience with the shogun. Hatamoto patronized the development of the martial arts in the Edo period; many of them were involved in the running of dojo in the Edo area and elsewhere.
Level 6: Kashindan
Wages: §100 per hour - Work Days: Mon, Wed, Fri - Work Hours: 7AM to 2PM
Kashindan was an institution of the retainers of the shogun or a daimyo in Japan that became a class of samurai. It was divided into the military commanders (bankata) and the civil officers (yakukata). During the Edo period, the kashindan became a fixed samurai class, and defined the political world of the samurai for centuries. The kashindan held significant power in relation to the ruler; they made him swear to rule justly, to promote them in accordance to actual meritEach samurai family that was in the kashindan of a daimyo, or the shogun, was paid an annual land stipendor rice stipendaccording the rank of the family. In exchange to this, the daimyo imposed severe criminal laws with the aim of deterrence, and held the right to make judgements on criminals. The kashindan lived in the vicinity of the daimyo's castle, and as they were affiliated with a single daimyo, they were segregated from the samurai outside their own domain.
Level 7: Samurai
Wages: §172 per hour - Work Days: Mon, Wed, Thur, Fri - Work Hours: 7AM to 2PM
You have finished your training as a Samurai, and now serve your local Daimyo. The samurai were soldiers who served as retainers to lords (including daimyo) in Feudal Japan. Samurai existed from the late 12th century until their abolition in the late 1870s during the Meiji era. Following the passing of a law in 1629, samurai on official duty were required to practice daisho (wear two swords). Samurai were granted kiri-sute gomen: the right to kill anyone of a lower class in certain situations. Some important samurai and other figures in Japanese history wanted others to believe all of them engaged combatants using the bushido codes of martial virtues and followed various cultural ideals about how a samurai should act.
These levels branch off from Level 7 of the "Samurai" Career
Level 8: Daimyo
Wages: §180 per hour - Work Days: Mon, Wed, Thur, Fri - Work Hours: 9AM to 1PM
Daimyo are powerful Japanese magnates and feudal lords who for eight centuries, ruled most of Japan from their vast hereditary land holdings. They were subordinate to the shogun and nominally to the emperor and the aristocratic class. Daimyo often hired samurai to guard their land, and paid them in land or food, as relatively few could afford to pay them in money. The daimyo used his band of retainers (kashindan) to administer his domain.Within their domains the greater daimyo had considerable freedom, even to the point of issuing their own paper currency with the shogun’s permission.
Level 9: Emperor
Wages: §277 per hour - Work Days: Mon, Wed, Thur, Fri - Work Hours: 9AM to 1PM
The Emperor of Japan is a position as the head of state which traditionally dates back to the 7th century. Emperors came to be known as the Tenno or 'heavenly sovereign' in reference to the widely held belief that they were directly descended from the Shinto sun goddess Amaterasu. From the 9th century CE, emperors and empresses began to be manipulated by officials of the Fujiwara clan, and by the 12th century CE, they were entirely replaced by warlords and shoguns as the de facto head of government. Despite the loss of power, the institution of the emperor remained a permanent fixture in Japanese politics, and imperial rulers continued to perform both a ceremonial function and to lend prestige and legitimacy to the rule of others. The role of the emperor of Japan has historically alternated between a largely ceremonial symbolic role and that of an actual imperial ruler. Since the establishment of the first shogunate, the emperors of Japan have rarely taken on a role as battlefield commander.
Level 10: Shogun
Wages: §460 per hour - Work Days: Mon, Wed, Thur, Fri - Work Hours: 9AM to 1PM
You have taken ultimate power in Japan and have been declared the Shogun! As the current Emperor is weak and was easily manipulated, it was almost too easy installing yourself in the role, with your loyal Daimyos and their Samurai forces at your side. The Shogun was the title of the military rulers of Japan during a period of about eight centuries. Nominally appointed by the Emperor, shoguns were usually the de facto rulers of the country,The office of shogun was in practice hereditary, although over the course of the history of Japan several different clans held the position. The shogun's officials were collectively referred to as the bakufu; they were the ones who carried out the actual duties of administration, while the imperial court retained only nominal authority.
These levels branch off from Level 7 of the "Samurai" Career
Level 8: Ronin Samurai
Wages: §180 per hour - Work Days: Mon, Wed, Thur, Fri - Work Hours: 9AM to 4PM
Although you have finally become a Samurai, in a tragic twist your current master was killed in battle, and now you have become a masterless Ronin! In feudal Japan , a ronin ('drifter' or 'wandering man') is a samurai who has no lord or master and in some cases, has also severed all links with his family or clan. A samurai becomes a ronin upon the death of his master, or after the loss of his master's favor or legal privilege. In medieval times, the Ronin were depicted as the shadows of samurai, master-less and less honorable. It then came to be used for a samurai who had no master. According to the Code of the Warrio ra samurai was supposed to commit seppukuupon the loss of his master. One who chose not to honor the code wason his own was meant to suffer great shame. Especially in the Sengoku period, daimyo needed additional fighting men, and even if a master had perished, his ronin was able to serve new lords. Many warriors served a succession of masters, and some even became daimyo.
Level 9: Sohei Warrior Monk
Wages: §277 per hour - Work Days: Mon, Wed, Thur, Fri - Work Hours: 9AM to 4PM
Seeking a more peaceful and spiritual existence, you have found a place with a group of Sohei Monks in their monastery. The Sohei are Buddhist warrior monks of feudal Japan. At certain points in history, they held considerable power, obliging the imperial and military governments to collaborate. Sohei were Buddhist warrior monks of both classical and feudal Japan. At certain points in history, they held considerable power, obliging the imperial and military governments to collaborate. Sohei were quite varied in their armament. The naginata is the weapon most often associated with them, though in legend as well as history many warrior monks are known to have been proficient with everything from spears to knives.
Level 10: Sohei Master Monk
Wages: §450 per hour - Work Days: Mon, Wed, Fri - Work Hours: 9AM to 4PM
After the death of the last leader, the Sohei monastery you reside at has elected you as their new leader. You must lead the way for the next generation, protecting the monastery and overseeing the training of its Warrior Monks. You will also need to keep the peace between both your temple and the feudal lords, as well as between the temples themselves.
The Gladiator career branches once after level seven, where you can go into either the Imperial or Praetorian Guard branch. The Gladiator Career generally focusses on the Athletics, Logic, Horseriding and Charisma skills.
The Samurai career branches once after level seven, where you can go into either the Imperial or Sohei Warrior Monk branch. The Gladiator Career generally focusses on the Athletics, Logic, Martial Arts and Charisma skills.
Both careers have their own uniforms and an array of different opportunities, some of which depend on which career branch you choose.
