Nasty Newman Ruins the Evening Part 1

‘Does Helen have to have your permission before she goes out and has a coffee with friends?’
Uncle Remington snarled at Newman.
‘It’s well after office hours, so I would think Helen was on her own time. I also find it unsettling that you knew just where she would be. It’s almost like you have her followed.’
Newman was quick to explain.
‘I’m fine with Helen doing as she pleases when we don’t have to be on location at four o’clock the next morning. As for having her followed, of course I wouldn’t do that. You forget I live next door. When I couldn’t get a hold of Helen or Reg, I wondered where they could be. It isn’t like them to just go off without telling me where they are going. I finally concluded they must be dining out and decided to do the same. As I was driving by, I happened to see that damned yellow slugbug parked in front of this place.’
Newman smiled at Helen.
‘You and Reg should really get rid of those old clunkers you drive, then you wouldn’t be so easy to track down when you want a bit of privacy.’
He took on a hurt look.
‘You could have just said something, so I wouldn’t worry.’
‘Well, did you happen to see Reggie’s car while you were out?’
Helen’s grin was wry.
‘Because I thought he was with you. He said he was working late tonight.’

Newman looked taken back and suddenly very uncomfortable.
‘Er...’ he cast a quick look at Uncle Remington and me. ‘Well, Helen, um...’
‘Don’t cover for him, Dex.’ Helen’s tone was so bitter. ‘Did he work late or not?’
Dex placed his hands on Helen’s shoulders.
‘Why don’t we talk about this privately at your place. I’ve been really worried about Reg myself.’
He cast Uncle Remington a gloating look.
‘You can cry on my shoulder if you need too.’

Every time I saw Newman, my heart started racing and my insides turned to jelly.
I really didn’t want him to be my biological father. The very thought made my flesh crawl.
Trent had seen Newman walk in and I could tell he was trying to get our order taken care of quickly, so he could rejoin us again.
Helen’s eyes filled with tears.
‘Maybe it’s my fault.’

‘No, Sweetheart.’ Dex whipped out a handkerchief and handed it to her.
‘None of Reg’s problems have anything to do with you. Come on, let’s go home. We’ll go to my place instead.
I’ll make you one of my famous Irish coffees and we’ll talk. Everything will work out, I promise. ’

‘Helen, listen to me.’ my Uncle spoke up. ‘I have no idea what’s going on, but I can tell you this, if there’s any trouble between you and Ramon, it’s because Newman is playing both ends against the middle. You can bet he’s telling you one thing and your fool of a husband another. I know how he operates.’
Anger flared in Newman’s eyes.
‘Your right, Mansfield, you don’t know what’s going on. I love Reg like a son.
I would never do anything to hurt him. I love both these kids like my own!’
‘That’s what I’m afraid of.’ my Uncle growled. ‘Because it’s well known you treat your own children like sh-‘
‘Enough!’ Helen flared at my Uncle. ‘Your so wrong about Dex!’
Newman's look quickly changed to triumph when Helen took up for him....
