I Have Questions That Need Answers Part 2
Once Uncle Remington had a fire going in the fireplace, I brought him the cup of coffee he requested.
He took a grateful swallow and seemed to savor the taste.
‘That’s wonderful.’ he sighed, taking another sip.
I stood in front of him, watching him enjoy his coffee.
My Uncle regarded my serious look.
‘All right, Love.’ he patted the couch cushion next to his. ‘What’s on your mind?’
I took a deep breath and just plunged in.
‘I want to know more about my mother....and Newman.’
My Uncle scowled.
‘The first thing I can tell you about Newman, is to stay far away from the man. He’s nobody to you and no one for you to worry about.’
‘I’m not worried about him. I just want to know more about him. There’s a lot about Mommy, I don’t even know.’
‘Dex Newman is a chapter from your mother’s life that’s best forgotten.’
‘Uncle Remington, I want to know why you hate Newman so much and why you want me to stay away from him. You told me a little, but I want to know everything now. I have a right to know more about my own mother!’
Uncle Remington’s look softened and he sighed.
‘I suppose it’s only natural that you would curious about your mother’s past. Maybe if I do tell you everything, you will heed my warnings and not be charmed by the man later on.’
That would never happen!
‘It’s not only Mommy I want to know about. I want to know about my grandparents and anything you can tell me about Daddy too.’
It occurred to my that my father must also have had a whole life before Mommy and me, that I knew absolutely nothing about.
Pain flashed behind my Uncles eye’s. I also saw sorrow, guilt, and remorse.
‘You’re right, Lanie.’ he spoke softly. ‘It is time you know your family history. There’s so much Mary and I couldn’t tell you while you were still so young. The only way I know how to do it, is to start at the beginning....’
