Remington's POV

‘Here drink this.’
‘That isn’t one of those horrible honey lemon concoctions of yours is it?’
‘Just take it.’
‘Oh, very well.’
Gingerly, I took the cup.
I was relieved to smell the fragrance of hot strong black coffee.
I had Trent trained better than I thought.
‘Now I remember why I keep you around.’ I teased him after I took a sip. ‘This is divine.’

Trent gave me a wan smile, before he ducked into the kitchen for his own cup.
I knew he was still hurting from our run in with Helen.
I was still simmering over Newman’s showing up like he did.
That story about his ‘just happening to drive by the coffee shop’ was total bulldren.
Newman had Helen followed.
I was also sure he knew exactly where that fool Reginald was as well.

‘If your head wasn’t so clogged up, you’d have been able to smell the coffee brewing from here.’
Trent took the place by me on the couch. He had that concerned look on his face.
I fought the tickling sensation in my throat and quickly took another sip of the coffee.
‘I’m fine.’ I snapped at him, when I could speak. ‘It’s just a common cold.’
‘Remington that cough really has me worried. You’ve had this so-called cold for three weeks now.’
I held up a hand to ward him off.
‘Don’t start on me, Trent. I’ve got more important things on my mind right now.’
‘What can be more important than your health? Damn it, Remington, if you’d just see your doctor.’
I really didn’t want to hear a lecture. Not now.
‘Enough! I have a @#$%! cold that’s all! I refuse to speak to you if you’re going to nag at me!’
I knew I was being bitchy, but Trent could make a mountain of a molehill if I let him.

‘Fine!’ Trent snapped back. ‘Do what you want. Forgive me, for even caring.’

I really did have bigger things to worry about. The way Newman eyed my Lanie was one of them.
It was the same way he looked at Mary. It gave me cold chills up my spine.
Call me if you should ever need me.
As if! I’d never let him near my little girl!
It never occurred to me that Newman would take an interest in Lanie, but how could he have looked into Lanie’s eyes and not seen Mary.
I also wondered if he were going to make Helen keep her hair blonde and sweet talk her into cutting it, as he’d done with his other ex-wives.
Once again, I felt as if some one walked over my grave.
Dear God, please let Helen part with that maniac unscathed in any way!
